‘SWG 2.0’ Divergence Online hits alpha 3, launches Indiegogo campaign

If Divergence Online sounds familiar, that’s because it’s been in pre-launch testing for a few years already. This week, it’s entered its third alpha and launched its third crowdfunding campaign.

The game bills itself as “SWG 2.0″ and “the MMORPG that began as the spiritual successor to Pre-CU Star Wars Galaxies but has since grown into its own living, breathing universe.” While these claims might seem wild, SWG players will find plenty that looks eerily familiar graphically, from the skill trees and surveying windows to the harvesters and buildings that are dead-ringers for the old Corellian architecture.

Two-man studio Stained Glass Llama raised $24,259 on Indiegogo and $19,626 on Kickstarter in separate successful campaigns back in 2013. The current campaign is intended to fund the game’s combat system so the game becomes more than “crafting simulator 2015.”

The devs are blunt about their crowdfunding:

You don’t need to trust us… Play the fucker right now! Leery of cash-grab crowdsourced vaporware bullshit? We don’t blame you one bit… The internets are inundated with them nowadays, aren’t they. That’s why, instead of asking anyone to take our word for anything, you, the potential contributor can download the freaking thing right now and see that it isn’t a bunch of crap. It’s actually less than 30% crap as a matter of fact*! Why not right now? Think (for instance) our crafting system is a bunch of Photoshop malarkey? Download the damn thing and see for yourself this minute, sucker, at www.Divergence-Online.com/download.

Don’t be like 20 minutes ago me. Don’t read anything about this article. Just run, run away now. Save twenty minutes of your life, and how much money you may have thought of spending on this game. Why? I’ll show you what I just found out:

@jefreahard moderator:

Agreed. But FFA PvP is a huge game-changing feature that affects everything else in the world, for better or worse. SWG’s opt-in flagging system was one of its best features imo, and FFA plus full-loot basically guarantees that this game will have a tiny handful of players on its best day.”

Oh wait… so H1Z1 is not the “Spiritual Successor” to SWG like John Smedley boasted?

Wow. I had no idea this website existed, until going through the dashboard on our IndieGoGo i noticed mad referrals coming from here and lo-and-behold, this post.

The responses seem to run the gambit of your average unmoderated web-forum, but after reading through them, I decided to go ahead and post a quick response because… Why not :)

Indeed, I’ll admit the game’s selling point makes a bold claim as “SWG 2.0”, but that’s exactly why our policy has always been to let anyone in the world test our claims by downloading our most recent build and seeing for themselves what it is, and subsequently what it can mean to the mmorpg community if and when it’s ready for actual retail.

True enough; It Isn’t Star Wars. We don’t want it to be, and that’s why we’ve steered clear of recreating anything from SWG that was actually branded to the Star Wars franchise. Divergence’s story is the story we want to begin telling and building on for decades to come, derived from the decisions and events that will inevitably take place in the live game.

In short; its SWG in the capabilities and style of its major game features, and in the amazing sense of community that it nurtured, and where that game (rest its soul) left off, we set out to pick up the torch and become the offspring that begins the journey of growing into its own original entity, dragging the mmo community kicking and screaming into the future with it if need be.

The reason Divergence has survived this long has virtually nothing to do with the fact that even in an incomplete alpha state, it’s still pretty much the best crafting and player housing/cities mmo out there and everything to do with the fact that when you actually sit down and evaluate the project for what it is, you can’t help but feel that this is a project that people care a ton about doing right. That’s why we’ve had two successful crowdsourcing campaigns and by November will have a third; Because as long as there is breath left in us, the game will continue to be better every day than it was the day before, until it’s finally ready to step into the light and stand on it’s own two feet.

That’s all for now. I want to thank Massively Overpowered again for the much-appreciated exposure in our time of need and also the people on here who offered kind words. Feel free to bug me/us about any questions or concerns you have about the project on our IndieGoGo page. :)

They can’t use John Williams’ Star Wars music – — I imagine they are going to be in legal trouble soonish, as the swg devs used to say….

Janio2 Expecting a hands-on article with it Friday. It’s a fringe kind of game for us since it’s not an MMO, but we like to find ways to cover them. :D

Polyanna We puzzled over this too. SOE/Daybreak, you’d think, would care, but nope. Disney probably just hasn’t noticed the asset issue.
