World of Warships leaves drydock for live waters

The majestic aircraft carriers and battleships of World of Warships are sailing into battle today as the game transitions from beta to live.

“Captains, thank you for all your feedback during the alpha and beta,” Wargaming said in its launch announcement. “We could not have made it here without you. There are far more smooth seas than stormy ones ahead of us, and we’re prepared to navigate it all with your support and enthusiasm.”

The studio said that today marks both the beginning of ranked battles and a weekend triple-XP event for first kills. You can watch the launch trailer for World of Warships after the jump, and stay tuned for a deeper look into the history behind the game later today.

You do realize that tier 10 is the LAST tier, right? No more after that. Hitting the LAST progression point in the game should take time – a long time. This is not an MMO where you hit the final level and the “real game starts”, and you can’t follow the same progression logic.

melissaheather CloakingDonkey Darthbawl ApathyCurve Damonvile Silvercat18 shitty balance, broken promises, overly harsh economy and missing features are now a preference thing are they?

Are you sure you’re not swooning over wargaming again, as you have a tendency to do?

Loopstah CloakingDonkey Darthbawl ApathyCurve Damonvile Silvercat18 got any more excuses to make?

There are plenty of F2P titles out there that don’t suck at launch… I think it’s rather fair to compare this one to what else is out there.

“instant gratification” lol… yeah you let me know when you reach tier 10 in like 1000 games, after having grinded credits in probably another 200 mid tier games, mate.  If that kind of grind is the opposite of instant gratification, then instant gratification it is.

CloakingDonkey Darthbawl ApathyCurve Damonvile Silvercat18 I can’t speak about features that are coded in but not present, but a lot of your concerns seem to be about progression. They pretty much follow the same formula like with WoT. Instead of instant gratification, you actually do have to earn your Tier 9/10 ships, and you won’t be able to do it productively as a free player. I’m ok with this concept – they have to make money.
As for your loading times comment, i think that’s a subjective thing. I don’t have a beast of a computer, and loading times are relatively quick. In addition – this game is a lot of things, but ancient looking it is not.
For the balancing comment, the game is super new – balancing act is a reiterative process and one cannot expect the devs to get it right right as the game launches (regardless of how long it’s been in beta).

CloakingDonkey Darthbawl ApathyCurve Damonvile Silvercat18 Nothing you said says “the game isn’t ready”.   It says “I don’t like it.”    Two totally different things.

I loved the big loud obnoxious full-screen Flash presentation, but then again, I like the game, so I thought it was cool.

The full screen, very loud ad for this is very obnoxious.  I have it so Flash won’t autoplay to avoid stuff like this, but then this ad can’t be closed unless you manually play it.

I’m totally cool with MOP doing what it needs to in order to keep the lights on, but overall the ad makes me have a lower opinion of Wargaming than before.

Actually, I’ve taken to playing nothing but CLs… hence the observation.  ;)  I’ve parked my BBs until they aren’t floating tiki torches any more.

I said it was the only glaring balance issue — as in the only one I see severely affecting game play.  There are other issues to be sure, but they are minor in comparison to the HE flamethrower problem, IMO.

ApathyCurve CloakingDonkey yes and it wasn’t ready for open beta either….  If you think THAT’s the only balance issue then you are either not playing at anything above tier 5 or you play nothing but battleships :P

Darthbawl CloakingDonkey Darthbawl ApathyCurve Damonvile Silvercat18 I’m working on a video about this, will link it when it’s done if anyone is interested…

Basically, there’s a whole bunch of features that have been present in the code and were in testing at some point and are still not done such as replays, clans and custom games. The game has no tutorial. Wargaming promised shared accounts for launch (premium time is shared but gold isn’t… because they don’t want you to use your WoT gold…), Loading times are ridiculously long and for how ancient the game looks have no business to be. Starting at tier 8 it’s practically impossible to make a profit in any ship unless you have an insanely strong game and it takes an average player about 800-1000 games to get to tier 10. So unless you are willing to grind credits at tier 5 or buy a premium account + premium ship you’re hard pressed to advance unless you have godly games.

Most importantly though the balance is completely out of whack. Tier 3+4 battleships are REALLY underpowered, whereas tier 3-5 destroyers are slightly overpowered. Tier 8-10 battleships are a bit overpowered and starting at tier 6 Destroyers basically don’t improve anymore.

I have been playing since the beginning of CBT btw, before anyone accuses me of not knowing what I’m talking about :P
