The Daily Grind: What’s the grindiest MMO?

Allow me to butcher a phrase: MMO grind is in the eye of the beholder. A few hundred architect entertainment missions in City of Heroes were a breeze to me but a monotonous grind to others. What was a simple matter of macros and a day of clicking for me felt like an impassable crafting grind to some of my Star Wars Galaxies guildmates. And in Ultima Online, the idea of leveling up animal taming or provocation or stealing again makes me want to, well, bust out my credit card for an advanced character and skip that crap, but legendary fishing? I’m on a boat. Skill level 120 baby, here I come!

As I’ve grown up and passed through MMOs, my tolerance for certain types of grind has truly diminished. I’m far more likely to grind for skills or experience nowadays than churn through raid or social experiences for overt loot grinds, for example, but then again, it depends on the loot too.

So what’s the grindiest — and least grindiest — MMO in your book?

I think the term “grind” and what it applies to is relative. As an example, leveling in FFXI took forever and a day and even after that you probably still weren’t at cap. When the cap was just 50, I think it took me nearly a year to get there but I enjoyed that game so much for so many reasons it didn’t bother me at all. I took my time and it felt natural and fine. When I got there, even without the top tier gear I felt powerful. That wasn’t a grind to me. In FFXIV, leveling is easy but because the combat system relies so heavily on rotations, something that you learn once and never deviate from, combat gets boring really fast. This makes leveling feel more like a chore and that’s where the “grind” starts to come into play.

Tithian jonny_sage because people like shortcuts. you dont really have to grind for isk though. you just do what you want to do and you make it, or the stuff you need.

melissaheather I hate to have to say this Melissa, but you’re setting yourself up for a huge disappointment.

Now, before I go any further, I will say that I am as excited, if not more so, as you are for the advent of VR. In fact, I’ve never been this hyped for an advancement in hardware.

But historically, every time there is a jump in technology, games take a few steps back. Gameplay gets astoundingly overlooked because all you need to sell is the new shiny.

After the novelty wears off, good games will have to come along, but my advice to you be prepared for the first few waves of utter crap.

I suppose it depends on your definition of grind. I dislike the moral judgement many people associate with the word, and prefer to keep it simple and non-judgmental: repetitive tasks. 
In that vein, I’d have to say any number of the old classics, such as EQ. I strongly suspect there are old classic asian MMOs that probably put the grind in old classic western MMOs to shame, however. 
If we’re looking at current gen MMOs, I’d probably go with Guild Wars 2. Philosophical arguments could be had at what aspects of a game are fair game or not for consideration of “grind”, but that’s why I prefer to view it simply as repetitive tasks, and almost ironically, I don’t think any current gen MMO can reach the levels GW 2 does in that department (which, considering the grind aspects of GW 1, shouldn’t really be surprising).

DC Universe Online. When you hit 30, further progression comes to a screeching halt and turns into a “farm Marks” grind. Before you make it to 40, the ability to solo those marks hits a solid wall. At least in games like STO, you can keep a steady progression of solo marks if you reallly want to, but in DCUO you join a league or you eek them out a mark at a time, with the time between increasing for each one.

lasterror With this definition, though, grinding doesn’t exist at max level. To me, grinding is simply the repetition of the same content over and over again. If you kill the same mobs over and over again in a circle, that’s grind. If you run the same dungeons over and over again for loot, that’s grind. If you do the same seasonal event over and over every day for weeks, that’s a grind. Not all grinds are “bad”, though, it’s only the person doing it that really determines it’s worth and whether the end result is worth the effort of repetition. Going to work every day for 8 hours is a grind, but I do enjoy the paycheck I get at the end.

lanessar Ceder Ugh, yeah. It’s as if they were designed to survive with at least 1% health just so that they could pop Moment of Glory. Eventually I just sat back and twiddled my thumbs until those two minutes (!!!) were up. Still not as bad as running into two or three master illusionists from the Carnival of Shadows.

I’m not saying STO is one of the grindiest, but every year, like clockwork, I come back to participate in the winter event for what feels like an eternity of time. I log in, do the race, run a few gingerbread man things, maybe do other races or the invasion, etc. After I do that endlessly and acquire the new ship, I pick it up, place the box in my bank, and then log out. My desire for playing the game, possibly even enjoying the prize, after a grind like that is totally gone. I have all the big prize ship boxes from every Winter event, and I haven’t opened a single one. If that doesn’t point to a grind problem, I don’t know what does.

Greaterdivinity melissaheather VR plus better AI might though. What if the 50 goblins all could vary their tactics  slightly so you never knew what to expect fighting them (combine this with an engaging VR combat system of some kind) I think then grind might be a thing of the past. at least for people who fundamentally enjoy these games
