Star Trek Online outlines the basics of the Admirality system

Seriously have a lot of ships, wow.
Veterans of Star Trek Online have inevitably made use of many, many different ships over the course of the game’s lifespan. You get ships as you level, often more than you necessarily need. You get access to ships as rewards. You even occasionally find ships just lying around because the game got another year older. So what will you use all of those ships for? Why, you’ll make use of them in the game’s upcoming Admirality system, a way of keeping your ships active in the universe even when you’re not actively helming them.

The Admirality system ranks your various ships by capability and allows you to send the ships you’ve unlocked on various missions. Higher-tier ships have better stat totals, but every ship also has an associated maintenance time needed after a given confrontation, meaning that higher-tier ships also have to sit in dock longer. There are also lengthy tours of duties available for the ships that allow players to pursue ongoing storylines. Check out the full dispatch for a clearer picture of what players can do when the Admirality system goes live.

vulpisfoxfire Also sounds like SWTOR’s companion missions.

Peregrine_Falcon vulpisfoxfire Actually, yes. Then I remembered it was Star Trek Online. I was actually hoping to have a hybrid system that was both doff and spare ship assist, with some fun in-depth mechanics based on the ships I had in my task force.

Liveware Problem  That’s how Cryptic sees it: I’m pretty sure all the ‘Exploration’ of Season 11 will be the ‘campaigns’ if the Doff 2.0, er I mean Admiralty System. As for the ‘standard’ Season 11 story missions that a player plays through…I’m sure it’ll be more of the same — pew pew with thousand of crew killed and hundreds of enemy vessels to blow up.
Many players(myself included) called it as soon as the Admiralty System was announced. Still it’s probably better then what Al Rivera (Captain Geko) originally had planned which was just a revamp of the existing Doff system with nothing new on that front at all.

vulpisfoxfire – Pretty much. You didn’t actually expect something new and creative in Star Trek Online, did you?

So…it’s basically the exact same thing as the Duty Officer system, just with ships?

I don’t know, Season 11 was supposed to get back to exploration. Instead we get another type of Duty Officer system. Personally I was hoping for a procedural mission generator which would have kept exploration fresh for a long time.

Some form of game system that allows Admirals to use their huge ship collections has been a popular player request for quite some time. It’s exciting to see it finally coming, and in a form that isn’t as disruptive as “promote our Boffs to Captain and let them follow us around as combat pets.”

It seems like a variation on the game’s Duty Officer system — which is not a bad thing. I’m curious to see how it all plays out.

This sounds really cool.. I just wish that old ships could be upgraded to higher tiers. I’d rather use the older ships then the ones that keep coming out.

This looks rad, and is making me want to pull STO out of the mothball fleet of my MMO’s -_-
Seriously, this year feels a lot like the last year or two for MMO’s. Nothing terribly exciting in terms of new releases, but fantastic/cool content updates/expansions for existing MMO’s.
