Leaderboard: Have you played Elite: Dangerous?

I’ve got the space sim bug again. Well, OK, I never really lost it, but work and other hobbies occasionally make immersing myself in something like X or Elite: Dangerous or Wing Commander untenable. I recently reinstalled Elite after playing around with it at launch, and I’m looking forward to jumping back into my life as an intergalactic trucker.

What about you, MOP readers? Have you played Elite? If so, what did you think?

Tried it. Didn’t enjoy it. Uninstalled and moved on. Felt nothing like the original.

Defector1980 but but, people want sandboxes….and when given them, complain there is “nothing to do” and “no structure”…..predictable, but still sad.

carson63000 I have a decent hotas now, But I managed fine with mouse and keyboard, or a gamepad for ages.
A hotas is nice, but not necessary.

carson63000 I have a joystick and I prefer mouse+Keyboard.  Just takes some getting used to.  Like back in the days of Battlefield 2 and helicopter pilots.

This is one of the things I like about E:D – its fidelity to the original game, but with everything amped up. We didn’t get a whole lot of direction, but there were enough hooks to keep it interesting.  “Leveling up” in this case is simply being able to advance yourself through your own devices, by trading, by combat, and so forth.
This is not to put down players of theme-parkish games at all (I’m one of those, too).  Each has its merits, and I enjoy both.  Not everybody does, I’m sure.
As has been pointed out, I would very much like to see offline play enabled before it gets sunsetted, because I suspect that they won’t give a toss when that time comes. But as that currently doesn’t get in the way for me, it’s less of an issue than the crappy download servers were. :)

From my perspective, Elite comes from a pedigree of a time when games were open-ended. There haven’t been many designed with that perspective in the last 15-20 years, most of it is regurgitated themepark level grinds for your character with level-gated “zones” and a “storyline” which all players experience similarly.

I haven’t played Eve – so I assume I’m missing out on one, but ED is one of the first real sandbox games I can remember in recent times. In that you create your own content, narrative, story. I understand that most people aren’t used to that, and just want bigger ship/bigger battle/to be the hero of a story.

If you look at some of Isinona’s videos on Youtube, you’ll get the gist of what I mean about your own goals. If that’s not for you, then it’s not for you. It’s a style of game I don’t see much of, so I appreciate it for what it is. Is it the best style of game ever? No. It’s a style that isn’t done much, and I very much appreciate that it’s there, and not dumbed down to a “go to this station, follow this quest marker” style of play.

That being said, I haven’t played in the last couple of months, working on TW3, MGSV, and a few other games. It’s something I splurge on and then come back to when I feel the need to be Cmdr Rousseau again, to look at the vastness of space, go harass traders, or hunt dastardly space-pirates.

PhoenixDfire Defector1980 You guys make a good podcast, and I enjoy listening to it every week. :) A CMDR in-game turned me onto it early on. Although I’m in America, I plan on making the trip out to Lavecon one of these days.
Keep up the good work!

Yep, must be into the hundreds of hours in and still loving every moment of it. I still find myself occassionally staring in awe at certain sights and sounds in the game. I haven’t quite got into the ‘Powerplay’ side of things which if I’m honest kinda blew my mind a bit and I’m still not sure how it works. I just wish I had more time to play it, oh and a VR headset as well :) Can’t wait for the Horizons expansion.
