MMO Week in Review: WildStar Reloaded (October 4, 2015)

Were you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review!

WildStar relaunched as a free-to-play title this past week, running into the usual conversion and launch stumbles: queues, discons, and downtime. Carbine nuked region locks, added new temporary servers to mitigate the load, and wouldn’t rule out a journey to consoles, but it did admit today that the queues aren’t quite at an end yet:

While we’re hard at work increasing the number of players we can let into the game, and we’re making continual improvements that are allowing us to raise concurrency, due to the number of people looking to play we expect the queues to continue for a few more days.

Here on Massively OP, we streamed some chunks of launch week, took the community’s temperature, and pointed our monthly Choose My Adventure at the revitalized MMO.

Read on for the very best of this week’s MMO news and opinions.

Hurbster A Dad Supreme ForgeUI is minimalistic UI overhaul but it’s far from perfect (bugs here and there, missing some new UI elements).

dorn2 ArtemisiaWS JamesCrow or..I can just wait for all these problems to be over really. Been waiting this game for years when I was hyped about it, now that I only vaguely care about trying it out (and mostly cause of friends I play no other game in common with anymore) I can wait some more. I don’t see why one should subscribe to a free game just to be able to get in at all, not even the worse games require that.

I don’t get a lot of time to play, but what i have done has been acceptable.   Weekends are not the time I play Wildstar, so it’s a good thing, as that appears to be when the lag and restarts are the worst.

Overall, i’m feeling pretty good about it.   I never really played it outside of the beta (never subbed because I didn’t feel it was worth it compared to my other options), so I don’t have anything to burn out on — it’s all fresh, and I think that’s where i’m having a better time than others who say that they got bored right away.

I guess, if you used to play it a lot and you got pretty far, and you’re expecting a lot to have changed other than the pricing model, then you’ll probably be disappointed.  But for someone coming in new who may have avoided it because of the pricing but were interested, it’s a pretty good pick-up.

I’m still a complete noob of course and pondering my way casually half-hour at a time so that may change later :)  But all in all, s’all good.  Just finished Element Zero.  Good stuff

A Dad Supreme I’m pretty much the same. Got ESO on the backburner, installed Wildstar and subbed to SWTOR. I just find combat in WIldstar to be awkward and janky (could the the terrible skill lag though).

Certainly not a fan of the popups in the middle of the screen or that bloody embarrassing level up message.

Are there mods to make the UI less, er crowded ?

The queue lets subscribers skip.  All the subscribers are on the main server. So until they fix it you’re going to have a large waiting time on that server.   Their tech to transfer servers is pretty mature though.  You’re safe playing on the new server and just taking a free transfer back when they fix the bugs.

JamesCrow btw James, the indicated waiting times are wrong, it said 20mins for me as well at the start, but it took 2h so…especially since the esitimate can’t keep into account priorities.

ManastuUtakata StonerMk2 misanthropomorphic  I uninstall certain games after I have grown overly tired with them. I would rather have the hard drive space. Besides, I am on a business internet package which doesn’t put a cap on my downloads (well they do, but they never bother to enforce it)

wolfyseyes  I played a bit over the weekend after transferring both toons to Entity-2. Performance was vastly improved from my experience before they spun up the new server. Knowing I would eventually rejoin the other server made me feel better about transferring.

JamesCrow Ok I’m gonna scream. After over 2 hours queue I get in, and just when I’m almost finished with character creation…it disconnects. Awesome. Guess I’ll be back in few months.
