EverQuest II updates on the server merge situation

What’s going on with the EverQuest II server merges? Inquiring players want to know, which is why Daybreak has posted an update on the situation as it stands.

The first merge will consolidate the Crushbone, Butcherblock, and Oasis servers into Maj’Dul sometime on or after October 19th. Daybreak is planning additional merges prior to the Terrors of Thalumbra launch, which is scheduled for mid-November. Following all of the merges, the studio will allow players to freely transfer between the four remaining shards.

“We’re also working to time this with the launch of the Terrors of Thalumbra beta server,” Daybreak added. “While we’re still working on optimizing the server consolidation process to minimize downtime, there will be extended downtimes for servers that are merging. Hopefully you’ll choose to spend some time exploring Thalumbra with other beta testers during this time.”

deganderson Wratts camelotcrusade jeremy2020 It’s also a lot of fun for casual solo players, but those dependent on PUGs to survive in a MMO are going to struggle.

deganderson Wratts camelotcrusade jeremy2020 Yeah, I think that’s true.  I know the tightest guilds I ever had were in EQ2

Wratts camelotcrusade jeremy2020 to be fair, eq2 is a guild before everything game. The guild comes first and most people never join a group not completely filled with guildies.
That doesn’t mean that the below max level areas aren’t dead though. Everyone has been max level for years. When they level up an alt they do it in a couple of days with lots of help of, again, the guildies.

I don’t think that eq2 is much fun without a guild.

camelotcrusade jeremy2020 Compared to other games it’s a wasteland.  I don’t log in much any more, but regardless of role or level you can spend all night in a group finder or posting on /lfg or general without any luck.  At the cap and with higher end gear it may be better.
PVP queues do seem to pop more regularly, but I don’t think EQ2 pvp is much fun personally

jeremy2020 I guess they want to make sure everything looks busy when the expac launches?  I haven’t played in ages so I don’t know what the pop feels like.

Is it just me or does it seem like one of the worst ideas ever to time server merges with an expansion launch?
