Take a look at RuneScape’s NXT client and the client’s design goals

Prettier than this.

With 15 years of history under its belt, RuneScape can’t help but show its age. But there’s a new client on the way, and one of the presentations at the game’s RuneFest convention showed off the client whilst discussing its overall design goals and philosophy. You can check it out now in a video embedded just below.

If you’re trying to watch the whole thing quickly, you should be properly warned that it’s about half an hour, all told. But it also covers everything from a look at the client to a history of its development and what this addition means for the future of RuneScape. Yes, the game’s getting on in years, but the team is dedicated to making sure that it looks better even as it grows older.

I really hope that RuneScape 5 (maybe within 10 years?) gets rid of the grid system and high tick rate (aka clicking and it takes a second or longer for it to register).

Was an interesting video to watch all the way through. I loved when they explain certain realities, limitations and unintended situations that crop up with more code and the longer that code exists as your mmo grows. Something I think that many players are totally ignorant to. Anyhow in my opinion it’s worth watching.

I was always fascinated that they went with Java to work with originally and then looked into Html5. I’m glad that they are finally moving into using C++ and the reasons why, which are quite solid reasons to migrate to C++ versus what they’d been using. Huge differences in what they can do and what they can control. Though it will require a lot of work to do what they’re doing, I think it will pay off in the long run. Specially since they do have such a loyal player base. (still watching the video, halfway through, just wanted to comment)
