The Daily Grind: Has a single screenshot ever made you want to play an MMO?

I don’t often look at a screenshot and think to myself, hmm, I should play that game. Yesterday I did exactly that, though, thanks to the Skyforge image in the header. I can’t put my finger on what appealed to me either, other than some weird sci-fi cyberpunk vibe coming off a game that I heretofore assumed to be about fantasy gods, grinding, and item malls.

What about you, MOP readers? Has a single screenshot ever tempted you to play a particular MMO?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Sometimes a screenshot piques my interest, but then I read about gameplay and that is the deciding factor. 99 out of 100 times I pass on the game since most games are just same ol’ same ol’ even if it has decent visuals. I haven’t really played anything that has kept my attention for more than 10 levels since WoW. The genre is so boring now.

ComradeStanimir BigJohnny1982 If people actually recognised Age of Conan, maybe Funcom wouldn’t be in danger of bankruptcy. D:

Not really, but in my defense I always wanted to give all MMORPGs a fair chance. So you can say I played a lot of them even if it was only a few hours. :-“

ComradeStanimir And what MMO did this make you want to play? Or did you not read?

Aion. I first found out about the game when a guild mate posted pictures from the Korean client on our forums. Immediately started following it. Incidentally, it was the first time I bought into the hype and was disappointed.

chosenxeno I’m actually sorry you found WoW first, I would see it sort of like finding McDonalds (a one size fits all, commonplace widely available cheap and easy and to access option), without seeing the ideas and both successful and failed, and the real meat and bones that came before it to evolve into that in a way….

I don’t mean any offence by this (even though it sounds like I do), but MMO players will always sort of stick in my mind as the early day people pre-WoW vs everyone introduced to the genre since than…. mainly cause the average MMO gamer I know that played the genre pre-WoW is just so different than most people started with WoW, or Post-WoW
