The Daily Grind: Have you ever been scammed in an MMO?

67

One quirk of some early MMORPGs was that character names weren’t always unique. It was possible to roll multiple characters with precisely the same name and appearance, and whatever unique identification system the game did have was completely hidden from the players.

Hijinks ensued, as you might imagine, when unsavory types rolled characters to trick their fellow players. I was fooled once myself way back in the early days of Ultima Online, when an outcast former guildie rolled up a perfect clone of our recruiting officer and managed to bluff his way into our castle and safehouses until we figured out the scam.

Modern MMOs usually prohibit reuse of character names, or at the least they’ll append some other unique signifier to help players avoid mistaken identity. But there are plenty of scams in MMOs still, particularly in lowbie areas, where naive newbies and trusting kids (like I was back then!) swarm. Maybe the most widespread is the lottery scam, so virulent that some games, like World of Warcraft, outlaw player-run lotteries entirely.

Have you ever been scammed in an MMO? What’s the worst scam you’ve ever seen, and in which game did it take place?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I played the ArcheAge beta and felt like I got scammed even though it was a key giveaway. I got scammed once in Maplestory. It was my fault. I learned from it though.

Once upon a time I was a kid who played Runescape. I wanted to buy crossbow bolts from another player since the goblins don’t drop them that often. Found another player, the bolts were strangely expensive but I brought them anyway. Then I found the proper place to buy arrows/bolts.  Whoops.

Looking back, that was a very under-ambitious scam and the scammer could of easily gotten a lot more from me. Too late now, I learned what a scam was pretty quick before running into a proper scam attempt.

disUserNameTake Neo_Wolf Actually there was and I went over that with NCsoft support at length at the time, not that it made any difference they had no intention of losing two subs for the sake of one irrespective of what they had done.
As for citing it to “you”, I no longer have access to CoH CoC’s and ToC’s because the game no longer exists and no offense intended but I have no desire to rake up the past and go over it all again with some random nobody.

Neo_Wolf I think if you give someone access to your guild storage in a game, and then they empty it out and leave the guild, there hasn’t been any violation of the ToC or CoC.  Correct me if I’m wrong by citing some specific language in those documents….

The story title should just be changed to “Have you ever played Eve Online?”.
