Make My MMO

This week in MMO crowdfunding news, Infinity finally came to Kickstarter. Seriously, this game has been in development forever, but that’s OK since it has a true-to-scale solar system with no loading or zoning anywhere in the game. Technically it’s called Infinity: Battlescape, and it’s a combat-focused primer for the larger persistent world that we hope I-Novae Studios gets around to making eventually.

The rest of this week’s crowdfunding news is rounded up for you after the break.

If you want to be misinformed, yes. DS is full of crap you can’t trust, and the PU has been in development for soon 3 years. You’ll find better sources at http://rsi.sc

I keep looking in these announcements for something like “Blah-Bi-Dee-Blah: A New Online Co-Op Multiplayer Game Constructed in the Spirit and Matching the Essential Design and Philosophy of Guild Wars 1” with Heroes, Dual Classing, etc., … :(

Descriptions such as “vast, dynamic world”, “action-oriented combat”, “focus on group content”, leave me yawning. It really still amazes me that such a successful game as GW1 has never been cloned or matched, not even by GW2 (a fine game in its own right, but very VERY different from GW1).

Forget that. There have been multiple events constantly. Pretty much every month there is another fly free event. I think they recently had one where you could fly everything that is flight ready. A promise kept by the team despite the whining of forum elitists.

Ironwu BKone You can always check out the videos of famous YouTubers playing the game’s prototype, where you can clearly see that they have already managed to accomplish that. And if you don’t believe them, with 250$, you can be playing that prototype by Christmas.
If you like the game on the other hand, you can get the finished product in a couple of years by investing just 20$.

“…true-to-scale…”  and “…no loading or zoning…” means there can be NO skyboxes.   Have you forgotten the asteroid belt?  Planetary surfaces?  Orbiting bodies, artificial and natural?
EVE and Elite asteroid belts are a few dozen bodies, at most.  The real asteroid belt is tens of thousands.
The math just does not add up on this claim.  Just modeling the solar system on a mile by mile basis would be beyond the capabilities of any reasonable server farm.  Much less modeling it on the basis of yard by yard, or foot by foot.
It would be good to read Derek Smart’s analysis of the SC persistent universe goals, even if you don’t agree with his approach or his mannerisms.  You might also want to read the recent article here on OP related to the mathematics of modeling large spaces and why SC just started working on the real persistent universe side of the game less than six months ago.

Ironwu Well, what is the solar system? A black skybox with 9 celestial bodies. Not much.
Anyways a seamless galaxy was in Elite3. It’s a 1995 game for DOS. Ran on 600kb RAM.

I’m calling bullsh*t on this one :

“…true-to-scale solar system with no loading or zoning anywhere in the game.”
