The Daily Grind: What do you think about Knights of the Fallen Empire?

I’m kinda feeling the urge to play Star Wars: The Old Republic. Can you blame me? There’s a new expansion, but more importantly that glorious film trailer has been looping on my desktop for seemingly half of its 38 million views.

I haven’t succumbed to the SWTOR urge, though, and so I have a question for those of you who have. What do you think about Knights of the Fallen Empire? Do you like it?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Sharpxe Metadirective Found the FAQ and yes its huge in term of content (for my part i mainly PUG as a commando healer in the 22 Flashpoints and 8 operations and I really enjoy them,  the difficulty, the fact  players communicate and dont go away at the first wipe)

5.  Can I still get Knights of the Fallen Empire if I don’t have Rise of the Hutt Cartel or Shadow of Revan?
All subscribers  will receive access to Rise of the Hutt Cartel and Shadow of Revan starting on October 27, 2015.
6.  How do I pre-order Knights of the Fallen Empire?
Knights of the Fallen Empire is not available for pre-order as it is free to all active subscribers . You must be an active subscriber to receive the expansion.

Metadirective Cool, so cost of sub + new xpac. Thanks for the clarification

Metadirective Sharpxe  Free for subs tomorrow.  Yup.  Which brings up a good point.  For a sub, especially for a new player or a player that left a while ago, it is a vast, vast world.  All of the original stories. Makeb, Shadow of Revan, 8 Operations, 22 Flashpoints, Strongholds, Galactic Starfighter and PvP.  Yikes!  For 15 bucks a month… that is great fun!

Sharpxe From what I understood The Revan xpac will be free from tomorrow (like the new xpac) for subscribers.

FeveredDreamer Qarran  I think you may be right.  Only time will tell, but from what I’m seeing and the feedback I’m getting from new and returning players in my guild, things look very good at the moment.

Qarran So far I’ve been quite deeply impressed by KotFE, every now and then a game that has been out for a while really hits its stride and I feel like this might be the time for SWTOR.  It is weird for me to go back to it given my general focus on action MMOs, but it really is a blast at the moment.

So.. I have been playing KoTFE for about a week now and there is an interesting phenomenon occurring.  You know about the story.  It is the hallmark of this xpac and it is outstanding.  What you may not realize is what this xpac is doing for group content.

Because all dungeons aka flashpoints are available to all at any time, not just as part of the story, there is a huge increase of grouping and playing through that content.  For some, this is their first foray into this type of content.  There are many players in my guild trying them out for the first time and they are liking it.  So much so, that are going to have to dedicate some time as a guild just to run them and there are twenty-two of them.

And… suddenly, there is a renewed interest in raids aka operations.  As a guild, we are not running ops every night and guildies are running them during the day with their alts.  Generally, we run them as a guild to avoid the stress of pugs but groupfinder runs are  instant.  And again, many players running this stuff now are new to it.  And they seem to be having success as they continue to do it.

Now, there have been horror stories of groups disbanding because they couldn’t figure things out too.  And Hard Mode runs are a dice roll if pug’ing.  But this is no different then any time players are trying group content for the first time.

Net, net?  This may only be temporary, we will see, but right now KoTFE is killing it for new players and returning players with their grouping content from my perspective.

Single player game? LOL!  If that is what you want, sure.  Multiplayer game?  Yup.  If that is what you like.  It is all there for the taking right now.

If BW makes a few minor tweaks and fixes a few bugs, KoTFE is going to be a huge boon for the game.

Looking to come back to the game. I quit playing when the Item Shop first came out. In order to get back into the game, would I need to buy both The Revan Xpac and this one?

Valkyriez SWTOR charges $15/month to sub (unless you opt for a longer-range plan). I consider that a “top-tier” subscription fee (e.g., WoW) being charged for a “second-tier” MMO (SWTOR). It isn’t that SWTOR is a bad game, not at all. I just don’t think it is on the same level as WoW in terms of bang for your buck and so it shouldn’t be charging the same sub fee.
Personally, I think Tabula Rasa, back in the day, might have had a fighting chance at viability if the developers hadn’t insisted on charging $15/month for what was really a $10/month game. Just my opinion, though.
