ArenaNet is tweaking Guild Wars 2’s elite specialization system

ArenaNet’s Colin Johanson says that the firm is updating Guild Wars 2 to reflect feedback received from players who are digging into the recent Heart of Thorns expansion.

He says that the new endgame mastery system has been well received, but that the elite specialization system will be tweaked to reduce the cost of unlocking every ability from 400 hero points to 250 hero points. Johanson says that players were excited to experience Heart of Thorns with the abilities unlocked, and ArenaNet failed to communicate its desire for the system to be part of character progression. “This means you will be able to access them much earlier in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns PvE or World vs. World and fully unlock them much earlier as well,” he explains. “This also means you’ll be able to experience more of the expansion story as your elite specialization earlier on while still maintaining some of our core goal.”

Adventure minigames are being tweaked as well, which you can read about by clicking the link below.

Serrenity Superbrak To some extent, beta testing this would actually be impossible. Why? Because people on beta servers don’t play the same way (number/length of sessions, activities during a session) they play in the real world. Especially when it’s a limited-time beta, whether that’s a weekend or a month.

excaliburlost Well, the Hero Points are still required for map completion, so that’s one incentive to still tackle them.

Does make me wonder about the next set of Elite Specialisations, though. Completionists will end HoT with more than enough Hero Points to unlock their next Elite Spec with points to spare. Maybe ANet decides that’s not as big a problem as they thought, or maybe ANet decides to do something to bleed excess Hero Points from people. (Kinda like how they converted all repeatable Skill Points into Spirit Shards, but hopefully a little more elegant this time around.)

I feel this is a good change overall if you look back on GW2’s development up until now. In GW2, unlocking skills was something that existed but wasn’t especially hard. Most people could easily have a robust set of skills by the time they were level 30 or 40, which was about the halfway point through the original content. And this was good, I felt. It helped it be about the journey, not the destination. I think a lot of people went into Heart of Thorns expecting similar re: Elite specs and were understandably disappointed. There’s a lot of long term goals to work for in GW2 and HoT that will take awhile for the people who like that sort of thing.. I really don’t think the elite spec should be one of them. The spec should be your incentive to go see the new content, but it shouldn’t really be what’s keeping you there.

Personally I’m having way more fun exploring Maguuma with my fully unlocked reaper and playing a lot more than when I was simply workign towards it.

There is, of course, the issue of what we’ll be able to do with all these excess hero points and if we’ll be given an incentive to go out and seek them, but I have a feeling that will be a problem that sorts itself out, what with brand new legendaries around the corner hint hint.

SoMuchMass But at the end of the day, HoT was still a product that was just as good or bad as any WoW release (I am using them because they are the big dogs). Not a lot of bugs, just stuff that people felt should be easier.

WoW and many other MMOs release stuff that is tuned harder than the public wants (because that is what they consistently ask for), and make it easier later. I remember when Cataclysm came out, and they made dungeons and raids a lot harder, then made them a lot easier in a later patch. I remember going from having to be so over geared and on my toes just to get through a regular dungeon, then after that patch being able to tank in my sleep. Threat used to be a real issue, but not any more.

This is just regular MMO development.

Serrenity DelusionalRogue Plus there is the huge benefit that you can skip Heart of Thorns and go directly to another expansion when it comes out. Then you can explore the old content during your free time. There shouldn’t be a mountain of work to do to play with your friends if you take a break.

alexjwillis There will be. Not everyone is seeing the complete picture when it comes to elite specs. To the veterans that have map completion on their main, it doesn’t seem to hard. They are used to doing lots of stuff, and it is shorter for them anyway. If you forget how long it took to get your hero points before, it isn’t a very difficult task. I am in this boat. I play casually, and I had it about 75% completed. After the patch, everything was unlocked.

To the people that just powered to 80, it would be a monumental task to get your specialization unlocked. One that may take you longer than it might take to explore all the maps (not to complete everything, but to look around).

As a veteran player, even though my spec is fully unlocked, there is still tons of stuff to do. There is so many armors and weapons to unlock, that I don’t even know where to start. Every little thing you do in the game leads to some other unlock, collection or achievement list. I am looking forward to mastering it all

Syco_at_Twitch …is this what we’re calling “responding to criticism” now? FML, sometimes I feel bad for developers, having to deal with stuff like this.

Caec This. I bought the expansion for the extra specs, and I can’t use them until Level 80, and only after grinding on content that is intensely solo unfriendly. I’m very close to uninstalling, as the stuff I do want is locked out of my reach, and I’m sure as hell not grinding every class to 80 and then doing the hero point grind just to see if I like what I’ve got.
