Blizzard secures rights to Overwatch’s name

Overwatch’s tagline is, “The world needs heroes.” If we might amend that motto in light of a recent story, it should add “…but no more lawsuits, please.”

Blizzard recently finished up a legal fight to secure the Overwatch name and trademark. Innovis Labs had a previous Overwatch trademark application for a video game but signed a co-existence agreement with Blizzard in 2014. This was fine for a year, until Innovis decided to sue Blizzard this past May, claiming that the latter had broken the deal and committed trademark infringement.

However, late last month both Innovis and Blizzard agreed to settle the issue, dismiss the lawsuit, and turn the trademark over to Blizzard. That’s probably preferable to renaming the superhero shooter Overswatch.

Aww… Overswatch could have been a cool Parker Lewis themed shooter!

Show him DotA 2 and HotS.  HotS was originally called “Blizzard DOTA” and Blizzard was suing Valve over copyrights to the DOTA name.   Funny enough, Blizzard lost that one and Valve retained rights to the DotA name.

Gnomeland Security Was chatting about the King buyout story with a friend last night and he was convinced that Blizz/Activision never sued anyone over anything (versus King, who sued companies over use as such unique words as ‘Saga’ and ‘Candy’). I was just like “Oooooookay.” Too bad the Internet exists and refutes fanboi logic pretty easily lol.

What makes it even better is that SpongeBob voices this Rick and Morty character.

Gnomeland Security They probably just wrote a number on a piece of paper and the suing company said “Thanks very much.  Drinks?”
