League of Legends plans updated client, mobile friends app for 2016

League of Legends isn’t going to coast through next year with the same-old client: It has plans to bring a vastly improved version to players in 2016.

In it 2016 season updateRiot Games said that it will begin testing the client in early 2016 with plans to roll it out later that year. The new client will be more responsive, easier for the studio to work with, and both streamlined and visually consistent. Only 30 players will be selected to test the initial alpha client, so if you sign up… good luck with that.

Riot said that it’s also working on ways to give players more social tools: “We’re already working on quite a few features that will make playing with friends easier, including parties, clubs, and the friends mobile app. The updated client takes that goal further by giving you a resource-light, standalone friends list you can use to stay in the loop without needing to open the full-size client.”

Skyewauker Sorenthaz PizzaDoh  Sorry I know you tried to post an argument but I gave up on reading when you started sucking Riot’s dick and made horrible assumptions about me that completely missed the target.   There’s no point wasting away further time arguing with you.
You obviously have no clue what the hell you’re talking about.

They’re complaining because letting premades into ranked soloqueue is going to destroy the whole point of solo queuing.
Maybe you don’t get it because you’re not the target of current ranked play, but they’re essentially opening the floodgates for a ton of casual normal SR players to come into ranked so that they can play with one another and get ranked rewards without feeling anxious about playing alone/in duos.  And it’s going to damage soloqueue majorly.

Skyewauker Armsbend Sorenthaz PizzaDoh  Uh, you’ve been able to play ranked 3’s and ranked 5’s for ages now, you realize?

Armsbend Sorenthaz PizzaDoh And LoL has its Team Ranked as well.  I don’t get the point you’re trying to make.  LoL has separate queues for ranked team and ranked solo play.

Justin – they aren’t choosing 30 players to test the system. They are only choosing players who have reached level 30 in the game =)

Sorenthaz Armsbend PizzaDoh In my experience mixing premades with solos just means the solos are going to get farmed. It’s never fun and it doesn’t lead to establishing long lasting friendships. It makes teams on randoms all blaming everyone else for a loss that they never really had a chance to win in the first place.

Skyewauker DugFromTheEarth You are right, competitive games are a breeding ground for people like this. However, some manage to design their games to help avoid the worst of the outbursts.

Games like League suffer badly from behavior issues because of specific design elements.

1. Small team. Small team games will have a higher chance of 1 bad person ruining the game for the rest of the team. If anyone on that team has a bad temper or short fuse, then the odds of them socially blowing up is much higher

2. Too much emphasis on individual perfection. League is every bit as much (if not more) a solo skill game as it is a team game. It promotes and rewards you for being single handedly awesome. In fact, there is more reward for you as an individual to be an unstopable 1 man army than for you to do the same successful things as a team. (if you do things yourself and win, you become even stronger and look even cooler). For this very reason, when another player gets in “the way” of another player trying to achieve this level of perfected awesomeness, it causes all sorts of rage to flow. “Argh you got in the way of my 5 man kill streak and kept me from earning the gold to buy my uber item before I hit rank 6!!!”

3. Too much emphasis on individual failure. When you screw up in games like league, the game punishes you hard. Both from a game mechanic level and a humiliation level.  This again, only works to bring out the anger in players. Blame is a common result of anger (as is the darkside :P )

Other pvp games on the other hand, have managed to avoid these types of things by taking such specific focus further away from the above. Making team sizes larger so the “burden” is more split and not as heavy on 1 specific persons shoulders. Not require one player to have to be amazingly awesome for them to feel like they are helping their team or doing their part. Lastly, allowing someone to fail without the ridiculously harsh penalties and need for therapy.
(on an interesting note, those who say they want harsh penalties for failing in a game, are often the same people that rage when they fail. Sorta ironic really)

Armsbend Sorenthaz PizzaDoh Its extremely positive.  We have a group of 2-5 guys that play league and other games together.  It sucks when you have to splinter up into 2 – 3 different groups just to play.  Now we can play ranked together.
