The Daily Grind: What feature do you wish MMO devs would stop implementing?

There are few things in this life that I’m sure about, but one of them is the fact that I can’t freaking stand MMO story. I wish devs would stop wasting time and money by shoehorning single-player narratives with cutscenes into multiplayer virtual worlds and instead spend time and money building tools with which players can tell their own stories. Or you know, just go make a single-player RPG and leave MMOs alone. Whichever.

I’m also sure that many of you disagree with me!

So let’s make a Daily Grind out of this. What feature do you wish MMO devs would stop implementing? Story? PvP? Crafting? Something else?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Most definitely I missed it. Complete with science eh? I assume it was was a peer reviewed study then?
I wonder how us sociopaths still find victims to get our rocks off when most “victims” claim they won’t even play pvp games anymore. Unless you mean they’re making victims out of other PVP’ers?
I can’t claim to know other people’s playstyles or experiences, just mine. And I know other people share my playstyle because I find them in games that accommodate us. Unfortunately mmo’s have gotten so childish in their freedoms and interactions, I barely play them. Games like DayZ and Reign of Kings are supposed to be unrestricted Griefer’s paradises if you listen to certain people though, and those are the games I find the best roleplay communities in now. So those are where I spend most of my time. Player policed rp servers.
Victim in a virtual game world is a state of mind. If you allow yourself to be a sheepish victim, there is always a wolf roaming around who will try to take advantage.

The funny thing about most of the replies to this is that every time anybody attempts to NOT do these things, they wind up having to put them in because turns out they solve problems.

FacelessSavior you must have missed the Gamasutra article a couple of weeks ago about how the majority of PvP interactions in most MMOs aren’t PvP at all, they’re Player vs. Victim. Complete with science.

Does social dungeons and raiding count as a feature (launching a MMO without a groupfinger)?

If not..

 Cash shop loot box.. whether they’re selling the boxes (packs) directly or just selling the keys and boxes are acquired in game. Just sell us the items instead of this psuedo-gambling.

Two features that interlock — forced grouping and the “holy trinity” of tank, damage, and healing as the only — and mutually exclusive — roles. City of Heroes broke that mold, but because WoW did so well, other designers follow WoW’s design slavishly either because they think making roles familiar will help them pull players away from WoW, or because they can’t or don’t want to work around a system that forces players to team in certain prescribed combinations in order to get through content.

Polyanna Agreed. I’m really disgusted with GW2 right now. Every new map in HoT has its own freaking currency– and some maps have more than one! Then you have particular keys for each individual map. None of these things go into the designated currencies tab in your inventory nor do they go into your ingredients collections. It makes me crazy! At least they are account bound. >_>;

Estranged Caerulei Voice acting can be a great help, or a hindrance.  In FFXIV, the general lack of voice acting allows writers to be unhindered in adding conversations and scenes, without costing voice acting paychecks, which allows for a huge amount of depth of story.  That said, but TSW and SWTOR have a tonne of depth in story, and at least for SWTOR it was from the obscene amounts of money that went into making it.  (I believe it is the most expensive MMO to date, and it shows, so that’s good.)
