What to do in RIFT when you’re level 65

The boogie, for instance.

So you’ve reached level 65 in RIFT, and as in any MMO, reaching that level means there’s nothing else in the game for you to do. Or is there? A new video from Trion is meant for players who don’t know what to do at 65, showing off the many options available and giving a top-level overview of how to get into these events.

The video clocks in at just a little under a half an hour, so it’s not a quick watch, but it does cover almost all of the activities you can undertake in RIFT. It’s a good watch if you’re new to the game or if you have a friend who’s just getting into playing.

Story: Finish questing, getting into Tarken Glacier, Nightmare Saga, Planetouched Wilds and their related dungeons and raids and chronicles.
PvE: Expert Dungeons, Raids, Raid Rifts, Nightmare Rifts, Onslaughts, Strongholds, Instant Adventures
PvP: Warfronts and Conquest
Side: Achievement hunting, Minions, Dimensions, at least one alt for another faction, or more for other races and classes (though just focus on 1-2 for achievements or else you’ll go crazy)
Community: Participate in the market via grinding and crafting, help your guild, set up and be in various events, help newbies, etc.

Given the engine performance (mediocre), emphasis on grind, and increased F2P modelling, this year I’ve mostly been doing: questing, dungeons, chronicles, alt leveling. I did several more things during Storm Legion, and almost everything in Classic Rift. At this rate, I’ll be down to only basic story questing in 4.0. Or not. A big thing isn’t the game design still, but how I get only 30-40 FPS tops (and more like 10-20 in busy spots). Clunky.

I’ll always love RIFT. But in a ‘first love’ kind of way. I can’t quit you! Its my WoW. But spending money on it again? I’ll have to revisit that next year or so. I could at least see myself looking into some Plane of Earth Expansion Mega Pack like Nightmare Tide had.

Veldan Has Conquest had any improvements at all?  Pre-NT it basically became a battle of mindless zerging premades where the team with the biggest numbers won.  The PvE-ish invasions/collosi were pointless to kill, and the only real unique thing going for it was the size of it.   It was like what happened to Alterac Valley in WoW except 10x worse.

ZenDadaist Yeah that was already how things were getting to be like in Storm Legion, and given Trion’s track record I’m guessing Nightmare Tide increased the grind quite a bit while giving less and less rewards for it.

annoyedbadger I’d love to see WoW have its pre-Legion event be like a Burning Legion version of the zone invasions from Rift.  The invasions system was really my favorite part about Rift up until it got to the point where invasions no longer wrecked entire NPC settlements and were mostly ignorable.

I won’t have to worry about what to do at level 65 because I haven’t bothered playing Rift since before Nightmare Tide came out.

Rift was fun until it hit a point where you can basically just macro entire DPS rotations into 1-3 buttons.   Not to mention the novelty of the Souls wears off fast when only a handful are actually good to spec into.

I still pop in to do my daily and weekly warfronts because they are fun but to be honest I have been losing interest in the game over the last few months in favor of other mmos . It seems a bit stagnant at the moment but thats probably because its in that period where there is a lull between one expansion and another .

Alatar Major rifts are not impossible, they’re group content.

Veldan evolv_monbly Styopa You can buy a level 60 boost separate from the Nightmare Tide pack now, I think. But yeah you have to do the last 5 levels on your own.

DugFromTheEarth The reason you do Planar Invasions is for the weeklies. You get a TON of marks and stones for those, and you need to defend against four planar invasions in the week (among other things).
I agree that the general rifts give you little reason to care. When I started playing the game, I loved shutting them down, but they’ve nerfed them to the point that they’re either NO challenge (minor rifts) or an impossible challenge (major rifts). There’s nothing in between.

I really think the game needs to completely revamp the rift system, and I dont just mean add new chaos nightmare uber rifts. I mean the entire system. Its the core of the game and what helps it stand out from other games, and to put it bluntly, the current system is very obsolete and boring.

Most players dont even bother with them. (aside from the occasional nightmare rift). A few ideas:

1. Make rift truely dynamic and random. After a few weeks playing the game, you quickly realize that the only random aspect of rifts, is their timer. They always spawn in the same location, and unless an event is going on, they are always the same type of rift in that location. Imagine a world where any type of rift could spawn anywhere. There could still be some level of consistancy, like certain zones could have specific types of rifts more often, but overall, they would feel more like they were hyped when the game was originally announced.

2. Rift rewards. Most rifts simply arent worth doing. You get nothing worth wild from them that you cant get from doing other things (other than NM ones). Rifts should give a chance at some really cool items and gear. I remember when the defiance crossover first happened and the hellbug rifts allowed you to get a hellbug mount. For me, that was a very fun and appealing. Sadly, its one of the few (and possibly only) times they have really done this. Trion needs to make a HUGE list of rare, unique and fun rewards for doing ANY rifts, along with epic/uber items for doing the really really rare rift events.

3. Rift invasions. Much like #2, no one really cares about these. The rewards or all but non existant, causing most players to simply not care. They could also be made to be a bit more random. Always knowing exactly where the enemies are coming from, sorta takes some of the excitement out of it.

Overall, the current rift system is such a small part of the game “Rift” now that it could almost be completely removed from the game without having that much of a gameplay impact. This shouldnt be the case.
