The Daily Grind: Would you want to play Fallout Online?

With Fallout 4’s release this week, plenty of gamers have gone back into the wasteland with savage glee. I will be among that throng, although even as I pick through the remnants of a culture long gone and help establish the roots of a new ones, I’ll be thinking wistfully of what might have been.

Fallout Online.

Legal battles prevented Interplay from creating an MMO based on this popular franchise, and Bethesda locked down the rights to any potential online version. Of course, I don’t think there’s much hope that the studio ever will be making Fallout Online, especially after its struggles with Elder Scrolls Online.

I’m curious if I’m the only one who wishes that history had played out differently here. Would you want to play a hypothetical Fallout Online? Is there demand for it in today’s gaming culture?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

As long as it plays like Fallout 4 (or better), hell yes. The problem I had with ESO was that it feel like crap, even compared to Skyrim, which is about 4 years old. Its restricted, the combat is sluggish, there are classes for some reason….it’s just not the same. If Fallout Online were Fallout 4 with real people running around, I’d play it, sure. I’d honestly just prefer a co-op game.

The #1 draw for me as far as Bethesda’s tentpole franchises are concerned, is the modding community. They take the framework that Bethesda releases and turn it into the Taj Mahal or Burj Khalifa. You couldn’t have that in an MMO. All you’d be left with is the framework, which is often low spec (to attract the widest possible audience, even those running on a virtual abacus, rig wise) with the corresponding low quality graphics, minimal usage of scripts (again, low overhead = more people can run it), and little in the way of real customization available. Unless Fallout Online features 4k graphics coupled with the kind of growth potential that the modding community has provided the franchise over the years (which is impossible, if only due to numbers and creative vision differences) , I’ll pass.

EO_Lonegun Glad you like Fallen Earth. Tiggs and I were testing it for Icarus for three years before it got released. Tiggs is still with the game as the community relations manager for gamers first.

Before Fallout 4 I would say absolutely not no way no how should a Fallout MMO exist. Now that they have implemented a really awesome settlement system I really want a way to visit other players games and see what they have made. Everybody get ready to take a drink, but I do think the Fallout universe could work as an MMO if it was all sand box like SWG.

I would also add for the naysayers that they should try out Fallen Earth before giving up on having a newer post-apocalyptic MMO.

I would only play a Fallout MMO if they managed to keep all of the features from the game and I don’t think that could happen. I prefer that Bethesda sit out on making a Fallout MMO,

apmartinez765 You are wrong and gas chamber is right. Zenimax dropped the ball from the start as a beta tester I can confirm it. The games translate well but you have to start with a good development team otherwise your screwed to start with. I am http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/profile/starbuck1771b14_ESO on the forums there the b14_ESO marks me as a Closed Beta Tester so I can confirm what Gas stated.

Nope… it’d probably end up sucking based on premise alone.  I could maybe see it working in a weird-ass DayZ sort of way maybe.
