The Daily Grind: What’s your preferred style of MMO combat?

133

A passionate WildStar discussion-slash-debate in my guild the other day on the subject of MMO combat styles had us all taking sides on what was obviously better. There were those who found action combat, with its faster skill usage and focus on positioning, quite thrilling. Then there was the crowd that preferred the older tab-targeting style with global cooldowns and more abilities for the option to think through fights and not just button mash. And that’s not even counting games like Guild Wars 2 that take a bit from column A and column B.

Maybe action combat is more the wave of the future and in line with what gamers are used to in other PC and console titles, but I still prefer systems like those found in RIFT and SWTOR. I’m not quite willing to have all of my MMOs be boiled down into six buttons that I smash with impunity like a toddler.

So what’s your preferred style of MMO combat?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

paragonlostinspace digi_owl Sadly you all too often end up with a case of fire everywhere. Just look at any kind of red zone on Wildstar. They change shape and size constantly, meaning that you are running back and forth hoping your hitbox is just inside the zone enough to not get nuked. And tat is just one attack of several even the least complicated of mobs will perform in repetition.

MagmaFist digi_owl Well Marvel Heroes is a ARPG in the Diablo sense, unlike CoH. But yeah, between the various ways to be temporarily invulnerable,  and the various skills that moves you across the screen in an instant, its something of a DPS race.

Early WoW style or City of Heroes.  Action combat is just reaction and dodging which get’s boring quickly.  Wildstar at least has some rotation within it’s small action button set, but could be improved with a little more difficult rotation and a little less constant dodging.  I want about 20 buttons, 10 of which are in the active rotation with an intricate priority system where decisions about the situation have to be made.  The other 10 buttons should provide very individualized class mobility, cc or defensive abilities.  I really enjoyed how classes interacted with each other in groups on CoH.  I also want proper theorycrafting outside of the game to make an actual difference.  I want people who do research and learn proper rotations to be far above the norm.

Yep, never. However you can still play it right now like I’ve been doing.
They have a small community that supports a proxy setup that allows you to play

While I prefer Action Combat (a la Black Desert) I still have a soft spot for tab-targeting. I think FFXIV hits the sweet spot. It’s not action but it’s fast paced enough that you’re always pressing something. Where it fails is that it incorporates one of the worst aspects of Action Combat: You have too few meaningful abilities. While that might sound off, the fact is, while almost every ability is useful, you just have too few of them overall and a good large chunk of those abilities absolutely cannot be used outside of pre-defined combos for some classes.

GW2 still has my least favorite combat system. it takes from both and fails at both. Bleh. It annoys me, because I really wanted to like it. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY GAMES ACTUALLY LET YOU BE A NECROMANCER? Not enough! Lol. Granted, GW2 necromancer pets are terrible, but still. I’d really like Wildstar’s combat with a few more abilities thrown in, but my prefered combat system is probably still the WoW combat system. I should like Rift, but I never really could get into it.

I used to prefer tab target MMOs (had so much fun in CoX) but I strongly dislike the SWTOR/WoW style with hot bars on all sides, requiring mods and/or multiple key binds. To be honest, I find it overwhelming.
On the ‘action’ side of things, GW2/WildStar just irritates me – spamming dodges with an enforced cooldown isn’t action combat to me.
Overwhelming hot bar hell and twitchy/dodgy action? No thanks.
Best and most enjoyable combat system I have found is in Blade and Soul. Active countering, combo abilities, stuns that require coordination etc. – seriously fun stuff.
