Rumor: Firefall studio Red 5 hit by layoffs [Confirmed]

53

Red 5 looks to be suffering through a round of layoffs, although the scope and reason behind the pink slips has yet to be revealed. MMORPG.com has an anonymous source that claims the layoffs are “major.”

One of the Firefall subreddit mods confirmed that there have been layoffs at the Firefall studio although he did not have any details past that.

Massively OP has reached out to Red 5 for an official comment and will update this post as new information arrives. We extend our condolences to those affected.

Source: Reddit

Update 9:45 p.m. EST: Red 5’s executive team issued the following statement to Massively OP via email:

“The organization optimization was due to our strategy modification, which includes empowering the support to the operation in various global markets and the upcoming PS4 project. Doing so requires specific skill sets and experiences. Red 5 will continue its commitment to developing AAA games and bringing the best game experience to its audiences.

We appreciate your inquiry and interest in Red 5 Studios and Firefall as we take it worldwide on multiple platforms.”

Yes. It takes so long to translate so that you can figure out what it’s actually saying — and you typically discover that it’s not saying much of anything worth hearing.

Agreed. Talk about adding insult to injury — they fire people, but can’t even pretend to extend them regret and well wishes.
Instead, we get this near-Orwellian corporate buzzword doublespeak, insinuating that the mass layoffs are some sort of empowering, epiphanic moment.
I realize the buzzwords are for investors — current and potential — trying to send a message that “everything’s just booming over here” — but I still find it callous and cowardly that they can’t even spare a line of insincere regret for the people whose lives they’ve put into freefall.
My opinions, anyway,

Liked how you mine for minerals with thumpers and kill bugs in levelless world. Then they redid change after change and chopped the world in zones. I realy missing the idea of a dynamic world it never became. The invasion where too short to run to them most of the time.

I wonder what Triple A game they’re developing? They sure haven’t released one yet.

I’m sure the mass lay offs will “optimize” them such that any future development / design will be dramatically improved.

“The organization optimization was due to our strategy modification, which includes empowering…”

I loathe these cop out statements.  Being a part of the industry at one time, it never felt like “optimizing” or “empowering” in fact it was quite the opposite.  It was a sign that shit was going down and you better pray that you were spared along with any teammates.   Grow some and simply call it what it is, your consumer base is not that stupid.

FireFall was fantastic during early Beta. It had some snags, but the idea of a high mobility FPS with horizontal progression and on-the-fly class changing was terrific.

And then Red5 had to change most things I liked about the game.

Thankfully they reverted at least some of those changes. But still, I don’t find the game as released enjoyable enough to put with some annoyances, such as having to pay a red bean (cash shop money) to respec my character, so I stopped playing.

I have to agree. Overwatch is closer to a faster paced TF2 than to FF.

Incidentally, if Overwatch had a well designed single player experience, or even a good Solo mode, I would likely purchase it. As it stands, though, meh; not really keen on paying full price on anything where I can only play in groups.

Depends on player preference. I tend to dislike a lot any kind of PvP that isn’t instanced (sole exception, currently, is Planetside 2).
