Star Trek Online previews the community-designed Jupiter carrier

The first community-designed starship is coming to Star Trek Online with the Jupiter-class carrier. While it’s got sleek lines, the Jupiter’s biggest selling point isn’t its firepower but its array of fighter craft, ready to deploy and to make use of the ship’s unique special abilities.

Jupiter carriers are able to provide a potent buff to all allies in a group, improving damage and accuracy whilst providing temporary hit points to all nearby ships. It also features plenty of Science seating (along with an Intelligence chair) to help disable enemies and buff allies. Those who reach the apex of mastery with the carrier will learn a trait to empower fighters with enhanced torpedos when enemy ships are locked in a tractor beam. If you want to launch waves of fighters while supporting your allies, the Jupiter is the ship to use, a perfect thematic link to its community-built origin.

She ain’t pretty, but with the right captain, crew, and gear and she can pack a punch. Its the first she to really make me replace my Atrox as my main she.

Karl_Hungus digi_owl The latest being a very short storyline (mostly reusing old assets), a mostly empty city map, and some heroic encounters (that are basically about beating up wave after wave of mobs) dropped into existing “end game” zones.
Sharandar, Dread Ring and Icewind Dale all added 1 or more completely new zones. Then came the dragon stuff that bolted some dragon mosh pits to existing leveling zones (though admittedly the next update gave us a zone comparable to Dread Ring).
But then came Elemental evil, resetting everyones progress as the existing end game zones was bumped back by 10, grindly, levels, and invalidated everyones equipment gain so far (oh, you are sporting a full set of fully charged IWD gear? Sorry, but the EE random loot is better).

And now Underdark…

Peregrine_Falcon RicharddeLeonIII alexhurlbut Well, the show and movies pretty much set the design standard.  And they did have non-saucer ships, but they were always relegated to support or background ships.

this is why real devs does not allow the players to have something to say. what an ugly beast.

TheChiefTurtle “Community designed” insofar as a multichoice popularity contest is design.

RicharddeLeonIII alexhurlbut – Does EVERY Starfleet ship have to look like a knock-off of the Enterprise? Can’t some of them look different, not have a saucer?
Wouldn’t a lot of the ships NOT having a saucer be better? Make the Enterprise look unique?

Damonvile Pretty much since FTL ships made most fighters useless since the smaller fighters and shuttles were limited in speed.  The big ships can go warp 9+ while fighters and shuttles tend to be limited to warp 5 or less simply due to power constraints.  What STO forgets is that star trek ships can fight at warp speed, which is one of the reasons fighters werent widely used except when fighting in a planetary system.

alexhurlbut RicharddeLeonIII True, but I wouldve preferred a saucer hull with fat fighter bay nacelles or lower hull, it fits the federation design philosophy better.

RicharddeLeonIII The design does fit a carrier; a fat whale style look.

I must admit I despise that design.  It looks like a fat whale with stubby wings.  I prefer a true saucer-based fed ship.
