World of Warcraft hails its 11th birthday

75

It was on this date in 2004 that a little-known fantasy MMO debuted on the scene after a half-decade of development and testing. False modesty aside, World of Warcraft was already a huge phenomenon at its launch (breaking all sorts of MMO records), growing exponentially over its first few years. While recently the title has taken a substantial hit in its subscription numbers, it still boasts 5.5 million players.

Today, WoW marks its 11th anniversary since its release, with players enjoying a gift package if they log in through November 30th. Blizzard is encouraging fans to use the #11YearsofWoW hashtag on Twitter to share congratulations and memories.

TonySan d0ub1ep1u5g00d Ah yes I should have known. The elusive troll rogue is so sneaky you almost dont think any exist. Just like I bet there are female dwarf rogues stealthed in the cinematic as well!

d0ub1ep1u5g00d There’s a Troll and Gnome Rogue in almost every scene. They are stealthed.

SoMuchMass I get that people’s taste change but to spew such hate for a game they have played for years always makes me laugh. Wow haters are comic relief to me.

So many people “love” what it used to be and “hate” what it has become without giving examples. It has become the “in” thing to do, to say “yeah, I used to play back when it was good”…

I loved that trailer back in the day. I always thought Taurens should have been a neutral race though. Never had anything bad to say about the game to this day. Happy birthday World of Warcraft.

…They got fat and lazy right before releasing one of their best-regarded expansions?

eekamouse The way you emphasized POD made me think it was an acronym (pile of dead?) or something for a second.

The game is bleeding subs not because it’s old but rather because Blizz insists on charging more money for less content while releasing it at an unprecedented slower rate.
