Tara Strong on voicing Marvel Heroes’ Magik

Marvel Heroes’ newest playable character has a very familiar voice actress behind her. Tara Strong, who has voiced characters in many cartoons and Star Wars: The Old Republic, returned to the superhero MMO to tackle a Russian accent for Magik. She previously lent her talents to the game for Squirrel Girl and Dagger.

In a new video released this week, Strong discusses what she’s learned about the character and how she tackled the role. “Magik’s voice has to be strong but not off-putting. She has to be likable,” Strong said. “She has a lot of different sides to her.”

You can check out the video after the break!

The accent sound so fake and forced

Mansemat Sunfyre Storm and Cat spoke to her in english, unless you’re suggesting they were using translation spells the whole time. She spent 7 years in Limbo with English speakers. Even during her resurrection as Darkchilde she spoke like a typical American. She’s had little to no reason to speak Russian since she was 7. You can assume that she has probably lost her accent or isn’t as thick as Colossus’. The portrayal of how they speak is way different. I don’t really mind the Russian accent in game but they could’ve gone with a slightly less stereotypical sound to it. She isn’t just Colossus’s hot sister.

Xephyr I recognized her as the voice of some Aurin female characters in WildStar, too.

Sunfyre Mansemat All the baloons with < > are in Russian. If you really need the page with the editors note proving it just say and I’ll post it but I really didn’t see the point.

Mansemat She has been casting a translation spell recently. It has always been unclear if the resurrected Magik still has a Russian accent. Remember this version of Illyana was resurrected as Darkchilde. Her speech patterns are more American than her brother too. I still have my Magik: Storm and Illyana copy and I honestly can’t find a panel of Belasco speaking Russian. In the page you linked Xavier claims he taught Illyana english while simultaneously admitting that he can’t read her mind. Illyana was playing him hard.

Mansemat I did indeed forget that part. However, having learned English telepathically, she’s still clearly picked up his American accent.

Tiamu Damonvile Apparently you’re not familiar with the origin of Colossus where he saves Illyana from a runaway tractor in the Soviet farm in the http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Ust-Ordynsky where you can visibly see her growing up before she had powers. if you’ve read any of the old X-men stories, Belasco speaks Russian to her. Russian is the only language she new until she escaped Limbo after 7 years. It’s not till then that she is taught English telepathically by Professor X. This is also how the other members of the X-Men learned Russian, so Illyana would feel more comfortable after her ordeal.

Gibbins Damonvile It’s still a far cry better than, ” people wont understand an accent so we’ll just have her speak american ”
When Colossus speaks in game he sounds like a Russian guy to me..like he should. I’m not all that worried that it’s not a perfect accent. Not all Canadians sound like they’re drunk and I don’t think I’ve ever called someone a hoser eh! ;) but it’s still funny to me when I hear people imitate it. When “Colossus” spoke in the xman movie, I thought wtf was that, it was a tiny bit part and you couldn’t even be bothered to try and make his 2 whole lines sound accurate ?

so I’ll take bad or contrived accents in my voice acting over ” make them sound American” any day.

Damonvile
Black Widow shouldn’t have an accent in the first place.  She’s a spy.

Mikey Moo Tiamu Damonvile Her brother Peter had a very thick and obvious Russian accent in the comics.
