Final Fantasy XIV launches a new free login campaign for patch 3.1

So light it up.
If you’ve been taking a little time away from Final Fantasy XIV but still want to get in on the additions from patch 3.1, you have a chance with the game’s new free login campaign. While previous opportunities to log in for free after a patch were generally restricted to a single weekend, the new promotion is offering players nothing but time, as the campaign is running from December 1st to December 31st.

Lest you think this is an entire free month for the game, there are more restrictions in place. Former players can log in at any point during the campaign and enjoy four days’ worth of access to the game, meaning that it’s not tied to a single four-day period but still lasts for just four days. Accounts used to log in also need to have been inactive for at least 30 days before being eligible. So you can’t hop in if your subscription just ran out, but if you’ve been away from the game for a little while you could take a step back in to say hello.

That moment of irony when I was talked back into it thanks to the aforementioned friend to where I’ll likely be redownloading and playing XIV later this weekend on my new PC.

Baemir confectionally Beats “PlayOnline”.  Any FFXI vets remember that unholy abomination?

Have the fixed the “must wade through 40+ hours of needless fedex quests, broken up by the occassional trial” gate that you have to get to in order to access post-50 content?

And no, I don’t mean levelling. I mean the incredibly bland and padded “story content” of the post-release patches that every character must clear between levels 50 and 51 to get that character into Heavensward and the all the associated content.

Wow, sweet!  Doubly good because I own it on both PS4 and PC.  So I’m assuming that I can switch between them with the same account and play until my overall account hits 4 days, huh?

confectionally While FF XIV is great game, its launcher, account management page, so-called “sales”, and many other out-of-game aspects are some of the worst in the entire videogame industry. They are a huge turnoff.

Nice, i literally just reinstalled it on my PS3 (computers busted right now and in need of repairs) after exhausting Destinys expansion finally just last night and was going to resub with friends on friday.

Guess i’ll be doing the ‘goodbye to FFXI’ event a few days earlier :p

By the time I get done patching everything since I last played in February, I’ll have like 2 days of game time… it’s absolutely ridiculous that you can’t even patch the game without being a sub.

That’s a sweet way to do the promotion.  Too often ‘free weekend’ events tend to hit when I’m loaded down with kids sports, visiting relatives, absurd commitments, etc.  At least this lets you do it on your own schedule, though I’d think starting the timer when you actually launch the client would be more fair than when you log in to the launcher to patch.  But, for free access, that’s nitpicking

Might consider it.  But that would fully depend on if my FFXIV partner would want to hop back into it with me, since I easily get bored in games like XIV when I don’t have any friends to play with.  Especially when there’s so much group content involved in the main questline.
