The Daily Grind: What rules would you make for flying mounts in MMOs?

131

Some MMOs eschew the entire idea of flying mounts. Some have them in from day one, while others add them in at a later junction (and usually at a cost). As we’ve proved time and again here on the Daily Grind, flight in MMOs is a mildly contentious topic touching on areas of exploration, freedom, world difficulty, and game design.

So today I’d like to put each of us in the shoes of a game designer given the task of instituting flying mounts into a generic fantasy MMO. What rules would you make for them? Would you keep flight limited in time or by area? Would flight force the rest of the game design to be more vertical? Do you have a brilliant idea of how to incorporate flying mounts that we haven’t seen yet?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

That’s some rose colored glasses right there. CoH flying was nerfed and buffed several times because of it’s ability to make the content trivial. They finally settled on a pretty nice give and take, but it took them quite a while.

It all depends on the game. I think the answer is about asking the correct QUESTION. And it isn’t, “What rules you want to make?”

In WoW, the question might be, “How do we keep content gated with flying mounts?” Or maybe it’s “How do we make flying as challenging to travel as on the ground?”

Honestly, I’m not sure what question is the best. That’s for the game designers to consider. It is really ridiculous to think you can’t design a game to handle a flying mount, or any mount. Some of the ideas are great below. Heck, just not having your mount vanish is something interesting.

Personally, i think a weight limit might be a great item. You have to take to the air with pretty darn empty bags. But again, that might be the answer to the question, “How do we curtail people from flying in and out with loot without risk?” But then, I’ve always felt that MMOs should have weight like UO did. If you start to carry too much, get a pack horse (and yet another thing to guard on the road!)

Peregrine_Falcon CoH flying started as very slow and after reaching a certain level. Kind of a novelty at first.   I think the article is leaning toward (faster) flying as a means of travel and exploration.  In some MMO’s (e.g. WoW) it becomes problematic because you can bypass gated content and have a great advantage over those who cannot fly.

SallyBowls1 Damonvile Given the nature of my original post I refuse to even pretend like there might be a serious answer to that :P

City of Heroes had the ability to fly from the day it launched (prior to WoW). Why is it that flying worked fine in CoH but somehow other MMOs can’t handle it?

If a game had flight in it I would want there to be actual content revolving around it, and not have it treated as just a simple travel and avoid enemies thing. I do like the idea of how FFXIV did it where you had to explore all the nooks and crannies of a zone to unlock flying there first, but it still feels like a waste once flying is unlocked and you never explore the zone again.

Having zones specifically designed around it, possibly having some flying enemies to avoid/engage, having some actual content to do while flying (I dont know what…racing maybe?)

Simple. No flying mounts.

If you have flying in a game, don’t take it away.
If you have flying unlocked through a certain system in your game, don’t change it to something else arbitrarily.
