Gigantic developer Motiga lays off 16, delays launch into 2016 [Updated]

Gigantic developer Motiga has apparently suffered a round of layoffs today.

Former Community Manager Allie Murdock tweeted the news:

We’ve reached out to Motiga and will update as we learn more.

Update: Motiga has posted about the layoffs on its blog, saying that it will delay the game into 2016:

Motiga is committed to making Gigantic a great game, and we’ve established deep connections to our community to help us do just that. We’ve received lots of valuable feedback throughout our testing phases, and as we reflect on the things we must accomplish to meet the expectations we have set for ourselves, it is clear that we need to move the launch window for Gigantic into 2016.

Unfortunately this change in schedule has meant Motiga had to make some difficult decisions this week. As a pre-revenue startup, our resources are finite. Stretching Gigantic development milestones over more time requires that we stretch those resources in the same fashion. As a result, today Motiga has had to lay off 16 employees at the studio. All impacted employees are receiving severances and job placement assistance.

Saying goodbye to these dear friends and talented colleagues is painful, but we remain committed to delivering Gigantic at the highest possible quality. As part of that ongoing commitment, we will soon share our updated production roadmap, within a post detailing the state, and direction, of our game.

For now, we are wishing our friends a sad but very fond farewell, and we hope to cross paths with them again soon.

Too bad to hear this game is having a rough road, it looks like it might be interesting.  But there are already some heavy hitters in this genre coming out which would hold more interest for me (any not have furries in it lol)

Samizdat Pretty much this. In a nutshell Gigantic is TF2 with pretty design.
They would actually have had a chance if they competed on the FPS-MOBA market as there’s not much in that department other than Smite.

Siphaed woolydub Trion has nothing to do with paladins. You are thinking of Atlas Reactor if anything there. Hi-Rez studios makes / publishes Paladins.

Why anyone would partner with MS on anything PC related is beyond me at this point.
I can’t think of a single MS backed PC game in the last 5 years that didn’t get screwed over after throwing all after thinking that they had MS’s full check book behind them, only to end up with late checks (if any checks at all).

Armsbend What an asinine assessment. On every level.

Siphaed woolydub TF2 is fairly old so it needs some competition at this point.  Overwatch and Paladins are different enough to where they won’t directly conflict with each other.  And Gigantic is apparently more MOBA oriented? So it could be fine.

Sucks for those people, but simple fact is MOBA market is already saturated. They’re better off in the long run career-wise to move on to other projects and genres/sub-genres more in demand.

Armsbend Don’t think so…read it’s at least a fifth of their staff and maybe a quarter, the CEO said just stated financial “resources are finite”, and simultaneously delayed launch.
A lot more than just ‘redundancy’ going on.
