Valiance Online roots for City of Titans

Valiance Online doesn’t see itself in direct competition with City of Titans for the throne of City of Heroes spiritual succession. How do we know this? Because the site not only said so but posted a video of City of Titans as a way to cheer on that project.

Actually, we scooped together four such videos from u2willdie’s YouTube channel showing the work-in-progress of City of Titans. After the jump you’ll get a glimpse of the quest system, an ice melee build, a fire melee build, and even more fire-punching goodness. What do you think of it so far?

Source: Valiance Online. Thanks to MagmaFist for the tip!
Shadow Elusive, CoT’s Community Manager, has clarified what has become confusing provenance for these videos:

“Time for an official statement: there are many videos in U2willdie’s channel that aren’t for us. However, all four of the ones here are. They were intended for internal view only, displaying successful prototyping of various systems, so there will be many artifacts or assets used for convenience not intended to represent the game’s intended look and feel. U2 is very good at rapid prototyping and applications of systems, he’s basically gaining familiarity with lots of individual ingredients of what we plan to assemble into a whole at some point. All assets in these vids are owned by MWM but many will not be used as shown in them.”

I stumbled into CoT back in 2006 and became a Controller obsessed player that used the game to de-stress after a hard day at work. I played as the healer Napolean and as Obsidian Force. I think I speak for a lot of us who are not code writing game builders that just want the landmark development dates, the BIG COMPLETION DATE, and not the day to day drama. Tell us when to send cash and we will send it.

ZNSinger I was a Controller obsessed CoT player that used the game to de-stress after a long day of work and ended up making lots of friends. I played as the healer Napolean and was often Obsidian Force. I think I speak for many who are not code writing, game building savvy that simply want to get back to CoT quality play! Post some key development landmark dates, give the BIG COMPLETION DATE, and to heck with the daily drama. Along the way ask for cash, we’ll send it.

So glad that both studios are rooting for each other. Let’s get real now, I would most likely be supporting both of them as would most exCOH folks who can afford to do so… Still waiting for news on new crowdsourcing events for these titles.

A Dad Supreme Wow, I really misjudged you man. I saw the whole gif thing and misjudged you as one of those sarcastic cynics who wasn’t really planning to listen. I apologize, and here we go.

Obviously, some element of competition is inevitable. But we do truly believe there is room on the internet for both of us to succeed at some level (we see the former CoH community as our seed player base, but not our entire available player base) and truthfully our visions for a successor are quite different, or we’d have merged back when Valiance first showed up (we seriously discussed the possibility). We’re going to appeal to different sectors regardless because of those differences, which is one reason we don’t see ourselves in *direct* competition. That said I’m sure we’re both internally determined to be the better game.

But that’s no obstacle to mutual respect and cooperation. We get city of heroes players who really get set on this, bashing one project or the other. And we’re both determined to discourage this. The players will choose the better game for themselves, and the goal is always to be the best game we can regardless of how we treat each other – so why not be classy? There is such thing as friendly competition. Sometimes encouraging this requires stronger statements. Valiances latest release of screenshots prompted some nastier than usual bashing of our project, and Valiance chose to respond with a strong gesture.

One final point – I think the last part of the sentence is more significant than you’ve given credit to. We are not in direct competition *for the throne of CoH spiritual successor*. There is no *the* successor. We are all equally legitimate successors, all sincere in our efforts to create a game. We are none of us scams or vaporware, but serious efforts. More than anything else, it’s that respect we seek to share equally.

We plan to support each other throughout the development process, and hope to find tactics of mutual benefit in the future. Inevitably, we are in competition to some degree. But nowhere near as much as many assume. That’s a choice we’ve made, and sometimes it needs emphasizing.

mukk The sheer amount of confusion reigning the comments meant we felt pretty much obligated to step in and clear things up, especially with the heat the Massively staff was taking on it. Should be done with that stage now. Now if you’ll excuse me, Daddy Supreme has rephrased his stance to great effect and has a thoughtful response coming.

Peregrine_Falcon Thanks Avel, you said it better than I could have – and more diplomatically than I did, something I readily admit. I certainly don’t expect name recognition, but that’s why I signed all my posts as Shadow Elusive, MWM Community Manager, so people will know in what capacity I speak.

I put a lot of effort into making sure everything I’ve said up here is factual and clear, and into answering as many as possible as honestly as my position allows. While that isn’t something I can expect you to know Peregrine, getting dismissed as a random person after all that effort was more of a slap in the face than I was able to keep out of my post. But I should have. That is part of my job as well.

mukk Actually less of a public argument but a “Gee! What just happened?!” kind of thing followed by the usual “What do we tell the press?” and the official announcements. I think that would work for a TMI/TL;DR version :D

I gotta say, the need to be right, correct, and polite all at once is impressive but it’s TMI/TLDR for most of the world.  I could argue, in fact, that these kinds of discussions are at best a pointless distraction in the minds of your intended buying audience and at worst they are a major turn off.

Sure, you are all ‘right’ and/or ‘accurate’.  But you’ve lost the only fight that really matters, I think.  Argue in private, agree/share/support/market/sell/trumpet in public.
