The Daily Grind: What’s the ideal reward for an MMO holiday event?

This isn't even my final form.

Every time holiday events roll around in Final Fantasy XIV, I feel compelled to do them on my main character if no one else. Here’s the problem: I basically never use the rewards. I just want to have them in the event that I ever want them, but so many of the rewards are cosmetic gear that I would never use for glamours. But every so often it’s a bunch of decorations or chocobo bardings or items I’m happy to use, and then I’m very happy.

I don’t mean to criticize cosmetic armor – I just don’t personally have much use for Christmas-themed outfits on the regular. Some people probably do. Some people have very little use for anything that isn’t an actual mechanical upgrade. So what about you? What do you think is the ideal sort of reward for a holiday event? What are you happy to see, and what would you be happy to never see again?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Sorenthaz Yeah, it’s that I had a piece of junk stock intel heatsink/fan. I just ordered nearly $200 worth of cooling parts to finish up the rig’s cooling…I can’t wait. *eyes glaze over*

It’s hard to find things everyone likes. So in case the game has an ingame shop maybe giving some coupons so everyone can find something entertaining for themself. yeah it’s boring but gift coupons are very popular in RL as well.
A more philosophical answer would be: Listen to the gamer and make the game greater than it was before. But that it’s more “the spirit of christmas” thing.
But I have to agree with the OP, most presents are useless and I don not use them (much).

Something fun and cool that isn’t just tacky xmas-themed armour, and that isn’t must-have BiS raid-quality gear locked behind a horrible grind that demands you log in every day for 3 weeks. Something like a spangly mount that can only be obtained when that event rolls round, but that isn’t just tackily themed.

BryanCo An Overabundance of Cats Yeah this is MOP where we talk about the theories and get into overly aggressive arguments about what makes things fun, not actually having fun!

Styopa The tavern brawl or w/e in LotRO was so freaking fun back when it first came out.  Not sure about nowadays but getting the Bruised, Used, and Contused title was hilarious.
Also for some reason I was really into getting the holiday stuff in LotRO, especially the horses.  So I’d master those stupid festival races and make sure to get every year’s festival horse that I was around for since at least for awhile they had new horses every year with previous ones being more of a prestige thing.

MilitiaMasterV wolfyseyes Sounds like you probably just need a better CPU heatsink.  The Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo has pretty horrible instructions and requires you to flip your computer around and on its side, but it’s quite cheap ($30 or so) and reaaaally good at keeping things running cool + quiet if you can survive the installation woes (and there are several videos and online resources to help; main problem for me was the stupid X screw thing).
