MMO Year in Review: Daybreak’s downslide (February 2015)

Yes, yes it is.

December’s many article roundups and awards always remind me that it’s hard to remember what happened last month, let alone what happened way back at the beginning of the year, so this year, I wanted to go through our MMO coverage, month by month, to hit the highlights and frame our journey before we launch into 2016.

We started publishing as Massively OP in February — the podcast too! — so that’s where I’ll be starting. Truthfully, January was dominated by the SOE implosion, as was February, when Daybreak laid off a number of key developers and rushed to reassure everyone that everything was fine. We also got an earful about Crowfall’s PvP and destructible environments as it headed into its Kickstarter launch.

But this is my favorite headline: “The Division is on track for a 2015 release.” Makes me giggle every time. Read on for the whole list!

An Overabundance of Cats That’s quite a leap of logic. As others have said, the risks and recompense are specifically laid out in a Kickstarter. No one is forcing anyone to pledge a dime. Those that pledge do so knowing the risks; as well as what they’ll receive for their pledge.
That’s not
“Being taken advantage of”
That’s
“Making an informed decision based on the information  presented”
Why do you care what other people decide to do? If you feel it’s a bad deal, don’t pledge. Simple.

So cracking a joke is against the rules now?  Seriously, which is the mod on the power trip?  Stop hiding behind “by mod”; I’ve been cracking smartass comments like this for YEARS.  So who’s the newbie moderator needing to “prove something” and is getting pissy over something so trivial like a jab at a game.  I’d like to  recommend to them to remove the stick from their ass “face to face”.

Damonvile Sythalin Yeah, seems that making statements of fact got whichever newbie moderator’s panties in a bunch.  I do not apologize.  Let them have their power trip if it gets them off.

Akami I applied for that job, I guarantee I could do a better job sitting in my kimono drinking coffee by my home computer, just wearing out twitter and facebook and gaming sites with active statements of some kind of another, even meaningless stuff that everyone has heard before, point is, I’d be engaging the top sites’ forums and threads and all the social media, assuring people it’s real, it’s gonna be awesome, and boy-oh-boy-just-wait.
I can only conclude one of two things is true – 1) they are so myopic about this thing they’re going to reveal a game ready for alpha and surprise us all suddenly, coming out of their holes and rubbing their eyes and wondering why people lost faith during the long silence, or 2) it’s going to be either merged with or replaced by Landmark
But it’s breathtaking to see an IP with so much cachet being so…  un-marketed.

An Overabundance of Cats rottenrotny I am into EQ, or at least was until the last two expansions.  The Darkened Sea was shit except for some nice artwork, and the Broken Mirror had some potential (was more fun than TDS) except for the incredibly buggy and broken  release was like an extended true alpha.  We are more than a month past the release date and so much shit is still broken.  DBG are far from the best thing ever if you like the EQ franchise, they are shitting up a once great franchise (at least the EQ1 side of it).  I had high hopes when Holly took over since she was actually a fan of the game, at least the EQ2 side and seemed to be excited, now i have to get high just to try to talk myself into having some hope for the future of EQ1.

Still waiting to see all these kickstarters deliver some results.  I think a few have launched, but doesn’t seem like anything prominent yet.
Really disappointed by the lack of progress out of EQN neck of the woods.  Only game I was even remotely looking forward to at this stage due to their (proposed) work on dynamic zone content.  Guess it’s back to another year of Korea porting over it’s MMOs to drain the wallets out of teens excited for stacked females and probably expansions.

Damonvile Sythalin And again, despite your dislike of the man, he will ALWAYS be more relevant in the industry than you ever will.  Feel free to continue crying about it; The truth usually does hurt.
