The Division’s RPG experience is all about the gear

If and when The Division releases, expect to find a game that’s just as driven by its gear as, say, Destiny. In a brief interview with IGN, Massive Associate Creative Director Julian Gerighty affirmed that most of the RPG mechanics will revolve around the weapons and armor you carry.

“The key to our RPG experience are the choices around weapons, skills, talents and mods,” he noted. “Do you want to build yourself out as a particularly lethal long range sniper agent who is able to push forward in that one challenging late game mission or are you going to step in the shoes of a healer with your group to make sure that your entire squad makes it?”

Gerighty touted several aspects of The Division’s experience, including dynamic weather, an open-ended storytelling system, the player’s base of operations, and the Dark Zone’s PvP. The team also put out a podcast that discussed the different interlocking systems and what players will be doing in the endgame. Check out a video summary of the highlights of this podcast after the break.

Karl_Hungus While Clancy is dead there is a universe as far as story goes that have interconnections and the like. It isn’t just all different stories for the differing books and games that have been made using the name and the larger universe it takes part in is all sorta linked together and these games are based in that universe setting where these other events took place from the books / games etc and that’s why his name is used in the titles…

Lots of haters here. Gotta stick up for what is now my most-anticipated game. Got to play the Alpha, and I feel in love right away. Can’t wait for this game!!

As someone who has played it, I can say with confidence, it definitely is not vaporware…

Level up to max.

Brute force some RNG drops to get top gear (Bonus points if they put RNG in some type of crafting process) .

Wait until they release an expansion where you do it some more.

I would hope that they actually put a little more into this regarding interaction and role playing. How many more Level to Max Loot Drop lobby MMOs do we really need?

The last Star Trek project Gene was involved in was The Next Generation. But comparing Gene to Clancy isn’t a good comparison. For starters, Gene created an entire universe. Clancy took the existing universe and wrote thrillers about the current geopolitical climate. You could literally take Tom Clancy’s name and put it on the next Call of Duty, and only diehard nerds would know the difference. That’s what I don’t like about using his brand, especially for a game like The Division where it’s not even based on anything Clancy did. The developers are just milking that brand cow.
