MMO Year in Review: WoW’s nosedive (May 2015)

23

This year, we’re taking a time-machine back through our MMO coverage, month by month, to hit the highlights and frame our journey before we head into 2016.

I’m not sure which MMO had a worse May: WildStar, which finally admitted it was going free-to-play this month, or World of Warcraft, which lost three million subscriptions in three months. May also played host to a bizarre string of developers shaming problem players, from Daybreak to Piranha to ArenaNet.

In meta news, we launched our Patreon, and Gaiscioch clan profiled us in a massive magazine spread. Thanks, guys. Read on for a peek back at the whole month!

Well, most of us humans kind of live in a bubble of self-perception and illusion. We think our jokes are funny, that our fashion sense is keen and that others understand us. Live in that bubble too much and your world view can get pretty warped.

Perhaps they need to not be integrated.

deekay_zero MikedotFoster Siphaed It’s not really public, its not like they post the players personal info. shaming someones online avatar is not the same as public shaming irl.

LordSolarMacharius MikedotFoster misanthropomorphic  I play a shit ton of League and then the remainder goes to like, a couple of hours of something. Lately Metal Gear, but before it was FFXIV or WoW. Time is really of the essence!

MikedotFoster misanthropomorphic Dude, there’s nothing for vets to do in WoW right now. This has been the problem with WoW since WoW was born.  Unless you’re a raider, there’s nothing to do after you hit max level.  If someone likes the PVP then more power to them, but I think it’s awful and unbalanced.  This is why I always find myself bored with WoW and I basically dropped my sub and probably won’t pick it back up.  Never say never, but you know what I mean.

MikedotFoster Siphaed I wish more devs understood this. Public shaming really isn’t the best way to explain to people that they are being assholes and integrate them into the game culture.

The moment they announced a patch called “patch 6.1: garrison update” it was pretty easy to see which way the wind was blowing, even if everyone had no idea what on earth convinced Blizzard that was the direction to go in. can’t deny they payed for it dearly in player numbers so maybe they learnt something from it.

misanthropomorphic “I can’t work up the energy [to comment about WoW]” … as he comments about WoW.

Perfect.
