MMO Year in Review: Smed & Smart (July 2015)

40

This year, we’re taking a time-machine back through our MMO coverage, month by month, to hit the highlights and frame our journey before we head into 2016.

Two stories dominated July 2015.

After Daybreak CEO John Smedley called out a Lizard Squad e-thug convicted of thousands of crimes — including the crime of making a terrorist threat on a plane Smed was on in 2014 — Daybreak itself was slammed with DDoS attacks, ultimately leading Smed to nuke his social media accounts and step down as CEO. Tributes flowed in his wake.

And then there was “Internet Warlord” Derek Smart, who kicked off the month by throwing punches at Star Citizen, presenting a list of demands to Chris Roberts, getting booted from backerdom, and then upping the ante by demanding Roberts resign in what has become the industry embarrassment of the year.

In happier news, July was also the month we opened our Marvel Heroes guild. Read on for a look at the best stories and articles of July 2015.

melissaheather Funny how showing enthusiasm was somehow seen as a bad thing for a man trying to lead the United States. I can watch that dude all day long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6i-gYRAwM0

Smedley never bothered me.  Steve Ballmer never bothered me.  And Howard Dean got a complete raw deal just for having a screamy “yeah!” of enthusiasm at a pep rally.    I don’t mind when these guys act a little crazy.   I like passion.  I like people who are enthusiastic and energetic about what they are doing.
I simply cannot imagine that Smedley did anything worthy of being harassed and SWAT’d and things like that.  The adults or kids who did things like that to him are punks and definitely deserve some kind of punishment.  I don’t mean Game of Thrones kinda punishment, I mean something that helps them mind the gravity of their offense.
Now, you can’t put Smart in that category.  He’s playing the non-traditional role of Professional Nay-sayer.  Smed and Roberts make stuff.  The other guy, not so much.

I’m glad massively finally acknowledges that is was embarrassing for them provide so much coverage to an internet troll. I love the site and am glad that lessons have been learned.

An Overabundance of Cats breetoplay  The teenager involved literally threatened to blow up a plane Smed was on.  I wouldn’t have a ‘boys will be boys’ attitude about the little snot either.

I don’t know where you were, but I’ve always seen that division. All the way back to the Genesis and the SNES.

If the game were to fail, I’d be interested to know the money was spent. That’s assuming the failure is something that could be tied to money, something that would be pretty hard to quantify. But that still wouldn’t change my fundamental opinion that any of us had the right dictate or even know what was going on. At no point was that ever part of the deal. We give money, he makes game, we get to see game being made and give input. At no point have I ever been under the faulty assumption that this was anything more than Roberts getting the money to build his dream game exactly the way he wanted. How could anyone who watched his pitch think otherwise?
As such I could never give him any credit for anything. Even if it turned out Roberts actually did buy a yacht with some of the pledge money. He rolled the dice and made a guess that any average person could have. I could make all kinds of statements based on my opinion of this or that with no fact to back it up and I’d probably be right at least part of the time. Big deal.
And no one has vilified him. He created his own mess with his attitude. You don’t see anyone beating down the door of that guy from that infinity game who gave a reasonable assessment who’s name I can’t remember because he’s not a headline grabbing, name calling, shit stirring price of trash.

Bluetouchpaper  I will never have a different view of Derek Smart. He will always be a fraud, with the with egomania.

“Many of my childhood friends spent time behind bars.I ran with Anarchists and those who actually destroyed banks.”

Oh wow, no surprice then that you don’t want to put the finnish teenager behind bars.
