See what it’s like landing on a planet in Elite: Dangerous with Google Cardboard

People have the time to start playing around with their holiday gifts now, but what’s the best use of those gifts? More apropos, is it worth getting your new little Google Cardboard stuff all set up and ready to land on planets in Elite: Dangerous? What does that even look like? Wonder no more; there’s a video just beneath the cut from PhoenixDfire with video documentation of what that looks like.

The video description on YouTube contains full information about the equipment and software used for anyone curious. Even if you’re not curious about the setup, you can sit back and relax as a ship slowly reaches the surface of a planet in stereo vision.

melissaheather I can’t wait for the VR of 2018-2020. You can test this 2015-2017 version :)

I actually got a Colorcross headset a while back. It’s a great way to see how VR works if you don’t have access to the “real thing.” I also used Trinius VR, but it seemed kinda janky. The video is showing it working better than I had it working. I might try it out again soon.

Sorta thinking about saving my pennies and getting the Occulus or Vive. Elite is a really great show piece for VR in general since they developed it from the start with VR in mind. Very immersive.

pid melissaheather yes, “clouds over sidra” (in the VRSE app) may be the most impressive film-based VR thing I’ve seen yet.

PhoenixDfire pid Thanks for making this, I’ll be playing with my new cardboard-inspired headset this weekend and this looks like a perfect thing to try!
Plus, I think Scottish accents are sexy, so that’s a bonus….  <.<

shadowblender Is this a case of Poe’s Law, or do you really not understand the whole “Google cardboard” thing?
