The Daily Grind: Who’s your favorite MMO antagonist?

You have been removed.

One of the things I liked about Star Wars: The Old Republic right from its launch is that it gave players plenty of antagonists to fight. Not just plenty of villains, mind you, but plenty of antagonists. Even if they had no role in the story beyond being a thorn in your side through a particular questing area, you had no shortage of characters who you wanted to drop just from a narrative standpoint.

But part of the fun of MMOs is that your antagonists need not sit there due to the game’s narrative. My greatest antagonist in Final Fantasy XIV for a long while was Titan, because at launch I was in a guild that just could not seem to get him down. I felt like our fight was intensely personal. My wife and I went out for ice cream when I finally beat him as a celebration.

And of course PVP can produce all sorts of entertaining rivalries – I know EVE Online players waging price wars with other players for years without firing a single shot. So between all of your many options, antagonists borne of game mechanics, PVP, or just the established narrative, who has been your favorite? A rival player? A major lore enemy? A difficult boss? Or even something more abstract, like a jumping puzzle?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

“Freddy Beaumont” from The Secret World.  He helps make ‘Dawning of an Endless Night’ possibly the best story arc I’ve seen in an MMO.  The voice work on him is superb, especially when delivering bits like this:
“If I could kill you, I would. I really, really would. I don’t like leaving matters unresolved. I’d do it cleanly and painlessly. None of the fancy stuff; I’m not that sort of villain, no stage magician. I take pride in my work, and I’m not afraid to get my hands… filthy! But, unless I grind you to a fine dust, the fucking bees will just whisk you away to safety”
PS I know I already posted CoH’s Requiem below.  Sue me!

Huge villains?  Arthas from Wrath in World of Warcraft.   The fact that he has a history and backstory preceding the MMO helps, too.

Minor antagonist?   SWTOR – the smuggler line, Skavak.   Man I hate that guy.  He got what’s coming to him good :)

Karl_Hungus johnmynard Yeah, too bad the raid fight lacked any real dialogue/story-telling elements like most raids do these days.

Avarius Karl_Hungus Oh it gets even worse than that.  I’ve run into many Miqote players who are named super cringey junk like “Mew Kitty” and the like.  Some of them are mildly creative like “Nyannis Mewsika” or something like that, but it makes me glad that I decided to make a male Au Ra over a male Miqote after starting fresh on Exodus a month or so ago.
Then what makes it even worse are the people who name themselves that and then do the stupid “Mew~ >^_^<” junk with everything they say.
Usually if I do a Japanese name it’s only my first name in Japanese and then a legitimate surname.  I don’t see the point in trying to be poetic or artsy.  And even then I rarely use it these days because I rarely play anything that would be fitting for it.   Like in FFXIV I use a spin on my usual MMO name for primary characters, because I only plan on having one character and I plan on playing him for a long time.  So it would be stupid to name it something dumb that I’d get tired of using later on (or wouldn’t fit if I changed my race).
But that’s what happens I guess in these types of MMOs.

Karl_Hungus I’m still glad that I’ve yet to run into an Elezen named Drizzt Legolas in FFXIV.

I think it’s a generally accepted fact that Arthas is the best mmo villian to date.

rottenrotny Yeah and since I was a huge fan of WC3 it felt like a fitting end to what I got to oversee happen throughout Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne.

To date? Probably Arthas/The Lich King.  His presence truly invoked a sense of terror and he felt legitimately threatening.  No other MMO villain has really felt that imposing or impactful from the ones I’ve encountered.   Deathwing felt too scripted with how he behaved despite being a world-shattering threat.  Garrosh felt like a forced villain.  Gul’dan is Gul’dan.
Other games that I’ve seen real villains in, again they’re mostly scripted like crazy and overly forced.  TOR for example with Revan – that was just a forced storyline to finally close off all the Revan junk.  It felt very similar to Illidan in WoW in terms of him going crazy while trying to build up an army to stop what he felt was a greater threat, only to draw everyone else into his line of fire.   GW2 as well didn’t really invoke any feelings for villains presented in the game.  They felt fairly bland and uninspired from the main storyline at least.  RIFT as well was meh-ish.  Crucia was okay as a manipulator and focus of Storm Legion, but I’m disappointed how Regulos was handled since he had been the first main villain you’re introduced to in the starter zone and then he was the boss of the second raid in Storm Legion.   There was some build up to it, but the fact that he was shadowed by Crucia was pretty lame.
FFXIV I haven’t dived far enough into to see who’s really the villain and stuff beyond the Ascian dude who’s pulling all the strings during the ARR campaign (I’m only level 44 and just recently recovered the Enterprise to get ready for taking on Garuda).  But he seems pretty cool I guess, as the whole evil manipulator from the shadows type.  And from the Heavensward intro cinematic which spoils a lot of story elements, it looks like some major shit happens and there’s some sort of backstabbing going on.

Well Titan…is where I stopped playing FFXIV for the first time (until I get back later on). My guild was trying to beat him for weeks with no luck..after some weeks, some of the members started “buying” their runs from the top guilds to get the relic weapon..I lost all motivation right there…
So Titan was my antagonist too, as was Leotheras the Blind in TBC…my guild had stuck in Leotheras for weeks too and when we finally beat him, I cant describe what happened on ventrillo :) …
