RuneScape throws a month-long party for its 15th anniversary

Yes, believe it or not, RuneScape is turning 15 years old this year, and by the look of it, this MMO is still doing incredibly well for itself. To mark this festive occasion, Jagex is throwing a full month of events and activities to give RuneScape the proper birthday celebration that it deserves.

The party includes special livestreams, a statue collection quest, a trivia contest, and a new in-game birthday hub with presents for all. One of the big rewards that can be earned through these activities is a 15th birthday emote that will actually grow longer and more complex as the year progresses.

Happy birthday, RuneScape!

Polyanna The aging visuals are thankfully being rectified in the first half of 2016 with a new client that has much better performance (current client is very CPU dependent and doesn’t use the GPU much) and graphics. The highest settings on the current client will be the lowest settings on the upcoming client.

To a lot of people, myself included, RuneScape was my very first foray into MMO’s.

This is by far the biggest game I never heard of. It seems to have such a huge player base, and has been around forever, but I never even knew it existed until sometime in 2013-14. I’m still a little mystified by its enduring appeal. It’s not just that people still play it despite the gross visuals and clunky game play. It also consistently seems to be one of the most watched MMOs on twitch, and is played by a lot of younger streamers. Maybe because it’s free, or maybe because it’s so mindless that it lets streamers interact more with viewers. Whatever the reason, it seems to consistently hover in the top 10 games on twitch along with pretty much no other MMOs except WoW.

If only I could peel off time from other stuff to maybe give Runescape another looksie.

Though at this point it’s been so long since I played my original character (whose inventory and bank is a clustertruck of a mess) that I’d need to roll a newbie account.
