LOTRO activates its new datacenter on January 11

Although it was delayed from its planned roll out last year, Lord of the Rings Online’s new datacenter is now ready for deployment. Executive Producer Athena Peters announced yesterday that the datacenter will be activated during a January 11th update:

We are finally at the point at which we are ready to announce the opening of the new datacenter with all new hardware! It has been a long road as we purchased and set up new hardware with updated operating systems, transferred all the data from the old worlds to the new and had to correct systems that had trouble with the transition for 32-bit to 64-bit processing. But all of that is past us now and we are pleased to announce that on January 11th, 2016 we will come down for a maintenance window at 5am EST and come back up around 3PM in our new home!

With this news I’m taking back my doom & gloom prediction.
Going through with a major hardware move & upgrade makes no sense for a game headed for an impending licensed based forced sunset.

This bodes well.

They wouldn’t be doing this for just a year. It seems they’re fairly certain they’ll renew next year.

Well, unless something completely out of left field happens.

Ah, but that a million to one chance… but as we all know, million to one chances happen 9 times out of 10.

Damn.

Finally, the Warg-stealth-lag will be reduced from 10 seconds to 9!

Nice to hear! Hoping Turbine has a better year this year than last.

Fenryr Basically, it seems like we’ll have greater server stability under higher loads, and smoother gameplay. Though I’m not sure if it’ll make a dent in something like Weatherstock, it’ll probably be easier to ride through Bree during peak hours for some players.

Also, they’re re-opening a datacenter in Amsterdam, so EU players will probably see greater connectivity as well.

Huzzah! Glad this is finally done. Not just because of the potential improvements to server performance, but because wrapping up the server transfer process will hopefully open the door to Turbine being able to discuss new content again.

Can someone elaborate what effect it has for us players?
