ARK’s 25th digest discusses dino nerfs, contest winners, and new ideas

20

It’s only been a few days since the tamed dinos in ARK: Survival Evolved were beaten nearly senseless with the nerf bat; stats were dropped significantly, swinging the power pendulum from uber hulks to weak little kittens. Devs have been addressing this balance issue, and the latest digest asks for feedback on the most recent patches that have increased the stats again.

Also noted in the digest are the winners of the Naughty or Nice competition video contest (folks can watch the survival competition’s highlight reels or a replay of the full three-hour event itself) as well as the winner of the XBox Hunt for Bionic Rex contest. But perhaps the juiciest part of the digest is the Q&A section, where devs reveal upcoming tidbits like the development of a grappling hook/zipline, a desert biome, SWAT-level armor, and the chemistry table (which acts as an industrial-size mortar and pestle). Additionally, the Dragon and Megapithecus arenas are being finished up, day/night behaviors for dinos will someday be a real thing, and the Survival of the Fittest mode will definitely be coming to the XBox. Catch these details and more in the official discussion.

Archebius LordSolarMacharius  There doesn’t seem to be any real way to predict where alphas will spawn. I was on the west coast on the beach (pretty darn safe area) and decided to relocate further north. Haven’t seen a single predator/carnivore the entire time…until I loaded up all my possessions on my 2 dinos and made my journey to my new home in the north…only to be massacred by an alpha raptor. Still haven’t seen any predators there since.

I’ve also seen alpha raptors in the south where there was traditionally pretty quiet areas.

Every time i log in to this game, I gawk at the dinosaurs, look up at the sky and geek out at the flying pterodactyls, stare in amazement at the weather, night sky, quality of the graphics, high res textures (it’s truly breathtaking, and takes way more horsepower than Star Citizen to max out), then i often die from some horrible beastie that snuck up while I was being ADD about the environment, I die, and soon I get tired of being in constant mortal danger, forgetting what I’m even bloody supposed to be doing.
So I’m still like, level 1 in my rags standing there shivering lol.  But man, i sure love this thing for the dinosaurs and the benchmarking kind of demo, seeing what my GTX980ti can do, it’s like Crysis kinda stuff.    And simply watching the dinos is amazing.   The crazy variety of prehistoric beasts is getting better and better too.

Nyres Damonvile They have since released two patches tweaking the stats. The community seems to be more in line with them now. We all have to remember that this game isn’t released yet. This is Beta.

Archebius Damonvile Koshelkin One thing to watch for in this mod if it has not been updated, apparently it stops some of the newer dinos from spawning, replacing them with the small dragons.

Koshelkin Damonvile This seems to be what some people are asking for.  I would not mind seeing 10-12 hour tame times be a thing of the past.  :)
The other issue was harvesting rates for dinos.  When their melee went way down, so did the amount of material they could gather.  That was addressed in the very next patch, so I think the devs noticed it was a problem right away.

Nyres Damonvile It was needed, though. My brother would take a pack of Dilos (very weak, quick tame times) and could kill just about anything he came across.
Obviously they took it too far, since they already un-nerfed it to some extent, but the balance level was definitely off – which is just as bad for playability.

Valcan321 Damonvile I was playing with a couple buddies, and we were setting up a base in a not-so-friendly part of the island. I was sorting gear into a cabinet so we could start building a house and walls.
Suddenly the cabinet disintegrates in front of me and the last thing I see is a black Alpha Raptor lunging through the crumbling wood to eat me alive. It proceeded to massacre my one friend and his bird when he got too close to the ground while trying to pick up our third. And then it killed our stranded teammate.
Clever girl…

LordSolarMacharius Where were you camped that an Alpha Rex spawned nearby?
