In 1999, the year that EverQuest released, work was already underway for another fantasy MMO called World of Warcraft. It wasn’t until a couple of years later that gamers got their first look at the game, but screenshots do exist from this ancient era of WoW development.
Perhaps you’ve seen some of these pictures, perhaps not, but it’s always a fun trip to see the very early stages of a game that would come to dominate the industry. This gallery contains one of the first pictures of WoW from 1999, the character selection screen, some funky models for the Forsaken, and the very first Molten Core raid.

melissaheather Vanguard really deserved a remake in a decent engine, not just new graphics. Hopefully that is what Pantheon is becoming. I feel many games would benefit from being remade in either Unity or UE4, due to the excellence of the component model implementation, better netcode solutions, as well as the render engine.
melissaheather I know if they remade FFXI with the FFXIV graphics and a somewhat renovated combat system, I would definitely play it, instead of the current FFXIV. Vanadiel was so much more interesting than Eorzea.
OK so here’s the question. Â I hear lots of people say that if (insert game title here) got a complete graphic update, they would happily return. Â I admit I do feel that way about LOTRO and EQ2, but probably not limited to just those. Â EQ1’s mechanics with ESO graphics? Tempting!
Question is, OK, if they updated WoW’s graphics to ESO-type quality, would you return? Â Would it be your game again?
Ket_Viliano paragonlostinspace DeadlyAccurate shadowblender  Ok, now I understand better. Thanks for clarifying for me.  :)
That AB map is a little off the mark, same with C’thun. Those are a little younger then the other screens. Not sure about the outlands one, since there’s bits an pieces of that all over the place and was constantly being updated and changed after release.

It’s pretty interest and cool to see what Blizzard did with it back then.
Ket_Viliano The key demographic for World of Warcraft now is chimps .
JinxysKaru I would do the 10 day welcome back first that will cure you .
Estranged I should totally check out TSW. Before Funcom goes under, thou I hope it does not come to that.
