RuneScape classic reopens for 15th anniversary

In honor of RuneScape’s 15th anniversary, Jagex Games Studio is letting more players experience the world as it was way back when. Current RuneScape players who are interested in joining the classic server have from today until 7:00 a.m. EST on March 11th to sign up on the official page. The offer, however, does not extend to brand-new accounts. If you plan in taking advantage of this opportunity, be sure to check out the official quick FAQ and the handy 7 Steps for Classic newbies offered on the official site.

Whether or not you go in for the nostalgia of the classic server, you can tune in to the official 12-hour celebration livestream going on now, then return tomorrow for another Developer Q&A (complete with exclusive teasers) at 12:00 p.m. EST. You can also wish the game a happy birthday along with everyone in the video below.

AlexanderDeLarge Believe me, this won’t affect the player base. RuneScape Classic has been available since its inception, they’re just reopening it for new members as previously it was closed off only to veterans. Once the excitement dies down the player base is usually around 50-200 people I believe. Currently it’s around 300-500 with all the excitement?

I love the fact the classic servers are still up.

They need to stop doing this. Between RS3, RS2007, DarkScape and now this, I don’t think the community can sustain what is there.

Played the hell out of this game from 2005 to 10. Loved the game, especially the writing and questing which has always been funny as hell and top notch. Happy Birthday Runescape!

There’s something special about the old blend of 2D sprites and 3D World. Spent many hours playing that.

I think I’ll pass on that trip down nostalgia lane, as that was *definitely* a part in Runescape’s life that I’m glad is long improved upon…

Might give the 2007 or the current version a looksie during the anniversary hub-bub though.  Even though I don’t even know if I’ll be able to access my super old (like 12 years old or so?) account.

Not that I will play this game but I am liking this wave of indie mmo design and classic old school server game play. It directly reflects player disapproval of the current industry and proves a market still exists for such games. I remember well the early 2000’s rush of mmos and let me be very clear: I am not glazed over by rose coloured glasses. Several mmos came out then that frankly I considered crap. The same will happen again but all that matters is if just a very few succeed and are great games.

I believe I am now in the pool of players fully willing to accept sacrificed looks for improved mmorpg systems and game play.

I still believe that the giant will swivel it’s head an take notice of classic servers opening up. Bioware profits over industry trends and I wonder if they can ignore the potential of a classic Wow reopening (in their own improved style mind you). Interested in seeing what could happen over the next 2 years (post next expansion of course).
