The Daily Grind: What’s the best pay-to-win MMORPG?

Here’s an odd question from a Massively OP reader: What’s the best pay-to-win MMO on the market?

I know pay to win is a dirty, dirty slander in the MMO community. However, as I’ve gotten older and real life concerns like owning a home, holding down a 50-hour-a-week, mentally taxing job, and maintaining a marriage take a lot out of me. I don’t have the time or energy anymore to min/max my gear, grind up levels, and devise clever boss strategies for raids. I want to come home, give a developer a portion of my disposable income, and instantly be allowed to kick ass and/or obtain the best pixels. So what are my options?

To me, the interesting question here isn’t how to define pay-to-win but how to define best. I mean, people were trading Ultima Online and EverQuest accounts back in ’90s, and that was technically pay-to-win — you could buy fully built characters, castles, the works, all from other players. And yet it never seemed to truly wreck the game for everyone else the way cash shop-based P2W games seem to be ruined. Clearly, it can be done. So what do you think? What’s the best pay-to-win MMO on the market for someone who doesn’t recoil in horror at the thought of P2W?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

The best p2w game is the one that have huge design oversight that ends up being exploited by f2p, making the ones who sink thousands cry.

A sincere thank you to those of you who took time out of your day to answer my highly offensive question, even if you did answer in the form of an insult. And thanks to Bree for braving the wrath of her readers for putting it out there. Looks like I need to give Tera a second look.

Yes we do. In this case pay to win refers to a player using his wallet to gain an advantage over some who isn’t.

Bree…. What an absolutely terrible argument. You cannot compare in game pay to win mechanics to people selling their accounts which was against the TOS. Many people got banned over trading. Similarly, but not an mmo, League of Legends has an issue with people paying others to rank them up. Again, against the TOS.

There are so many varying degress to the definition P2W that I don’t know how I can answer this question.  Some think P2W is limited to end game gear, others thing that it applies to crafting, and still others will claim that if you can get that super cool mount from the cash shop it is P2W.

For me, the distinctions don’t matter much.  However, when the ability to buy from the cash shop co-opts the game itself and the core mechanics of what we know to be an MMO are no longer relevant then it is a problem, no matter what the items are.

IMO there is no best or worst P2W model.

lavayar CistaCista My point exactly, you buy characters because you know what you’re doing. Because buying is worth the buck.

Recently I bought some toons but I am not a whale. The “problem” of EvE is specialization. You might need a indy toon or dreadnought toon or etc. Learning all required skills for that activities on you main character will take years. So, buying toons and ISK will gives you pass to desired activities.

And off course every stupid whale that buys very expensive all-in-one characters barely knows anything about specialization in EvE.

lavayar CistaCista Try telling me that a player that has played for a week and has no money, but is immensely skilled, can attack and kill a player who has also played just a week, but bought a year-old character and a T2-fitted battleship with ISK that he paid for with PLEX.
I don’t think so dude. The guy who put real money into the game wins every single time. Player skill has absolutely no say in the basic battle unit of EVE. You can complicate that with gang warfare and politics, but that is completely irrelevant to the point.
