Dungeons and Dragons Online preps Gnome race and 10th anniversary dungeon

In 2016, Dungeons and Dragons Online is joining that elite club of MMOs that have been running for an entire decade. Yes, this year DDO turns 10 years old (insert “can you believe it?” reaction) and the team is preparing a “big party” in February to celebrate the occasion.

The centerpiece of the anniversary events will be the debut of a free dungeon that will reference the game’s history and popular characters. “It’ll also give you the opportunity to defeat some ‘devs’ in battle,” Executive Producer Severlin wrote. “Yes, I plan to try to kill you in-game.”

DDO is also preparing a brand-new race for Update 30: the Gnomes. The race will include a Deep Gnome iconic version and will be about the same height as a halfling (albeit with a little more heft and facial hair).

Wakkander bryanjturner sciencestick I would have preferred them to spend in on LotRO and DDO to bring it closer to GW2/Tera in graphics quality while keeping their identity.

wanderv15 bryanjturner The money they spent on that DC MOBA, they didn’t print it after all.

amberscion Well they are updating the old trees but as a business they need new stuff they can sell. I’m just glad the game is still growing. If you can look past the graphics it’s a great MMO.

bryanjturner sciencestick Well, they have never stopped developing content for DDO, or LotRO, and for 9+ or so years, most of which were long after it was profitable, they developed monthly content for AC. DDO is old, and has an aging engine that was never known for particularly good character models anyway.

As to the moba, I blame their corporate overlords WB for that, but can’t really fault them for trying to leverage the DC brand further, it makes sense. I can blame Turbine for making the most cookie cutter version, but ever since AC2 flopped and they redesigned their concept of MEO into LotRO, Turbine has been all about copying what is successful then trying one relatively minor twist to set themselves apart. Worked for LotRO, flopped for Infinite Crisis.
It is a shame really because a superhero moba makes a lot of sense, it allows you to leverage both big and small characters from the vast franchise and do some interesting things, a third person one like smite that took advantage of the various movement powers of different heroes and maps that have a verticality to them could have been interesting, albeit difficult to trailblaze. Even the infinite crisis concept, where you had alternate versions of characters isn’t a bad one, though they probably should have focused on a broader hero selection instead of a dozen batman variants.

But will the new Gnomes come with free fishing rods and pointy caps? that’s what I want to know. Happy Birthday DDO.

sciencestick bryanjturner How does that change the fact that Turbine decided to invest money into a game mode that was past its prime, a game mode way shallower than any game you might suggest I’m interested in, and against their player base when they could have spent that money updating their aging portfolio to keep up with the times?  If shallow means a game that still develops content at a reasonable pace then yeah I’ll stick with shallow.

Yaaaay!  A new race!  When the old races have lousy Enhancement trees.
It’s just like the new Warlock class, when so many already existing classes had not yet had their ‘class pass’ to bring them up to par with the handful of classes which have had their ‘class pass.’  Or the classes which are still lacking a full set of Enhancement trees.

Turbine seems to think that releasing something new will bring excitement.  I’d be excited if they would finish the many other things they started and then let drop to the ground instead of finishing.
