The Daily Grind: Do you like starting over in MMOs?

93

I used to think I had a sickness, or at least a weakness, as I was constantly rerolling characters in MMOs. While friends were hitting the level cap and becoming all uber, I was puttering around with yet another alt in the starting zones.

Sometimes this was to try out different classes or perhaps because I simply didn’t like the race or look of my character. But over the years I’ve come to realize that one of my favorite parts of MMOs is starting out in them, and it makes sense to chase that feeling. I like taking a fresh character with nothing in his or her pockets and helping them grow into a formidable hero. I also enjoy the rapid progression of the early levels and the extra care that often goes into newbie zones.

Do you like starting over in MMOs? Do you have an embarrassing array of low-level characters as evidence of your weakness?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Total Altoholic. I have only legitimately reached level cap once in WoW, on the first character I ever rolled. The 3 other maxed toons are from boosts from my 2 accounts and my one purchased boost to take my lock from 60 to 90.
I maxed a couple of toons on Lotro at the time and did a little raiding there, but those toons aren’t max now.
For some reason, toons were simple to max out in Neverwinter Online and I maxed out one of every class available at launch.
I have one character in Rift who came close to max level but never quite made it all the way. I feel so unfulfilled on that one, haha!

Yes but what I think I’m more a fan of, is a NewGame+ and even a difficulty setting slider (with potentially relatively more rewards to compensate). I would love if I could ‘restart’ The Secret World’s main story again, while keeping my character.

I hate it, actually. This is why I’m such a fan of how FFXI and FFXIV deal with classes. One character but you level each class on that character individually. You also have the option of creating new characters for each class if you choose. I mean, sometimes I want to be a healer and some times I want to tank. I don’t mind putting in my work to get them each up to snuff but I hate the fact that there are other valuable things I just can’t get across multiple classes easily (think dropped mounts in WoW as an example). Using WoW as an example, I can’t hop on my Paladin and then hop on my motorcycle because I leveled and built that over on my Priest. So now I have to do that all over again? I personally hate that but I understand why it’s so rare: cash shops. I don’t hate cash shops in general but because you often have to buy certain things for each character, this is how they make money. Another reason is that it’s just become the norm and we accept it.

Oh, I take umbrage at this line: “Do you have an embarrassing array of low-level characters as evidence of your weakness?”
I’m quite proud of my array of low-level charcters because I spoil them to bits and twink out their gear to the hilt using my higher characters. :p The best augmentations, the highest quality weapons, all of their class shinies, spangly mounts etc. They’re the ones doing the carrying if I team with others, not the ones being carried!

I will have 1 of each class on the faction I am playing on. When I started WoW, I leveled 3 characters at the same time (warlock, druid, and shaman) playing them for a week then switching. Once they were all up, I would make 1 new one to play in downtimes until it capped. That said, I can not play more than 1 of the same class.
In WAR, I knew someone with 3 Disciples of Khaine and I couldn’t understand why (they were all max level to various RR).

End game? What’s that?

I rarely hit level cap in a game (it used to be never, then FFXIV:ARR came along). Most of the time I get to the mid levels (about the time when the grind hits) and I get bored or get distracted by a different class.
I’m in no hurry to level my toon (which usually means the friends I make in-game, are only good for a few days, before they leave me in the dust). The leveling journey is the most important part. In most games, I have my character slots filled, but I rarely dispose of an existing character (I’m just too attached to them).

Oh good, here I thought I was the only one. For me, it’s more of a “possibilities” thing. When you first make a new character, there’s so many possibilities, so many different paths…  so much potential. And the early levels are often where a game shines because it’s trying to hook the player in for the long haul. Usually in an MMO, I find it turns into a grind/slog somewhere between level 10 and 20. Quite often I’ll even delete that character, guilt free, to start a new one. I mean, the potential idea has worn off, and the drudgery of the level grind starts to set in, so off to make another new character! It’s rare an MMO gets me to reach level cap, it really is. Of the two dozen MMOs I’ve played, I think I’ve only made level cap in 3…  maybe 4, with a single character. Usually I then shelve that character and go play with the character creator again because I’m not willing to bother with the gear grind that masquerades as “end game content” these days.

I am an Altoholic of near epic proportions, I have 2 100s, 3 ninety-somethings, and loads of characters under 90 that would love for me to return to WoW. In every MMO I have played I usually have one of each race and class in my roster of characters.

Normally if I start an MMO I reroll a ton until I find that toon I like.

Get that toon to max level. Repeat.
