Blizzard delays the return of Overwatch’s beta to February

Blizzard has delayed the return of Overwatch’s beta, according to a post on the official forums today.

Game Director Jeff Kaplan says that the tentatively planned resumption date of mid-to-late January isn’t happening because the team isn’t ready and wants to add “one more big feature to the next beta patch”:

“After looking through all of the feedback from last year, one of the things we noticed players consistently mentioning was their desire for more game modes in Overwatch, in addition to Point Capture and Payload. Without getting into specifics, we are working on a new game mode. And we’re very excited about it! And we have some great new maps to support it, too, but we need a little more time to get everything just right.”

“Rather than try to rush a beta patch out this month (which would mean the new game mode would have to be put off), we’re going to take a few extra weeks before bringing the Closed Beta back. By doing so, we can make sure we can include the new game mode along with the new maps. This will also allow us to do some additional polish to the game’s progression and reward system. Though all these features will still technically be a work-in-progress during the beta, we’d like them to be at a certain quality bar before releasing them for testing. “

Kaplan won’t give a hard date but says the team is shooting for mid-February. “[A]nd we don’t intend to slip out of February,” he vows.

JudgeDavid101 Stupid complications. How dare they try to work out kinks during the Beta stage. Adding new game modes during Beta! What do they think this is? Do they really think they have time to add something new at this point! How dare they! We DEMAND polished Betas! We paid good money for……oh, wait.

This game has always been besieged with complications way back from its Titan days.

I really like Jeff.

He’s able to talk about game development in a way that keeps him and his team feeling humanized and not like this group of mysterious people who may or may not care about a game.

Every time he delivers bad news like delays or addressing hard feedback, he always does it in a way that helps people understand that it isn’t something that can be fixed overnight but something they will address.

Keep it in the oven for as long as you need.  Blizzard doesn’t make new stuff, but the way they can polish existing ideas is worth waiting for.

“And we’re very excited about it!”- Can companies please cut the shit? Obviously you’re fucking excited about it or else you wouldn’t be working on it, let alone announcing it. “We’re very excited about this thing we want you to buy!” Who wrote that shit? Did they used to sell vacuum cleaners door-to-door?

Glad their doing another game mode I just hope its either capture the flag or team deathmatch. Though with how blizzard makes games these days I have a feeling its going to be something stupid like both sides trying to deliver a payload at the same time.

Good deal, don’t mind waiting at all for a new game mode! I feel like Overwatch is going to do *very* well…

“Without getting into specifics” – come on, Blizzard, it’s obvious that the “new game mode” is just some kind of “capture the flag/briefcase” ;-)

Also, I really hope they’d increase the number of players per game, at least as a separate, more “casual” game mode. I always liked the large number of players in other similar FPS games, and people who won’t like it can always select different “mode” with lower amount of players. Can even re-use same maps for that (as long as it’s not something crazy like “64vs64”).

This is reasonable. It’s not accountably complete yet, and they haven’t laid down a solid release date that I’m aware of.  Looking forward to seeing what the new feature is. :)
