Otherland opens the doors to Water Isle, goes on sale

Hey everyone — Otherland would like a minute of your time. It’s raising its hand for you to call on it because it has some exciting news and really wants a little attention.

The early access title patched in a new zone yesterday, Water Isle. Water Isle is the third of five planned areas that are based off of the Chinese elements. This area reunites players with the Water Master and throws in 70 new quests to conquer and a level cap increase to 55. The update also added the option to buy credits in the cash shop.

Otherland is currently hosting a major sale on Steam. Through February 1st, you can pick up this early access title for 75% off at $5.

EpicViking Actually, it’s off Steam at the moment even for NA.

Oyjord I loved the books, and I’ve read the entire series (which if you aren’t familiar with Tad Williams, has approximately the same page count as the complete Encyclopedia Britannica).  At $5, there’s literally no reason not to.
If people are playing, I might try it out tonight if I can pull myself away from FFXIV

DeadlyAccurate CBSA82 Oyjord Loopstah Hi all,  Ok, so I pulled the trigger as mentioned above.  I’m a total n00b to any and all things “Otherland,” including the books.  Here are my thoughts:

TLDR? It’s fun, and well worth $5 (and even worth the $13 I paid).

More detail:  I played only for a couple of hours, so of course there’s a dangerous honeymoon phase you need to consider.  Having said that, I was always interested in what was going on, and had fun while playing.

I had (still have) really NO frakking clue what’s going on, however.  There is virtually no exposition in the game at all.  It’s easy to figure out the UI and gameplay, but as for lore and story? Good lord, I’m SOOOOO lost.  That’s ok though.  I’m hoping that either gets added later, or perhaps I’m not supposed to know, and will learn as I play.  We’ll see.

The art design is wonderful, but not for everyone.  It’s hardcore geeked out scifi.  No loveable gnomes or elves here,, but that’s one of the key draws.  No matter what you say about it, it really is a different art design.  I dig that.  It’s SO sick and tired of the glut of Asian games which apparently ALL have the same art design.  Lamba Mall, the first place you enter that’s out of the newbie zones (at approx level 6/7) is a joy to explore.  The music in game, btw, is horrible, and I suggest turning it WAY down.  A minor flaw, but if we’re being honest, a flaw nonetheless.

The combat was fun, an intuitive UI very similar to ESO, with fun abilities (at least for the Marksman class I chose).

The game was stable, with no probs at all in synch or stability or FPS (and I have a very mediocre PC setup).

Hell, I was really surprised by the fun housing system the tutorial system leads you to.  The game really does seem to have some fun systems in place.

Of course it’s a tad rough around the edges, esp. in animations, but these are things that are always easy to fix.  The systems are important, and so far, they seem fun.

I look forward to playing again tomorrow.  Can’t beat that for $13.

Oyjord After reading the top few steam reviews, I bowed out of making the purchase. after all, $5 is $5. Better in my pocket.

Loopstah Oyjord Meh, it’s so cheap, I just bought it, and the CE version at that.  It’s only $12.49.  I blow more than that just clicking on my Amazon bookmark, heh.  Here’s hoping it’s fun!

Oyjord I’m in the same boat. $5 is what a cup of gourmet coffee costs nowadays so there isn’t really an excuse not to pick it up – but seeing those early reviews is really making me hesitate.
