Star Wars: The Old Republic’s story stream talks about resuming romance and future story developments

I love the nightlife, I love being marched in front of an enemy...
The next chapter of Knights of the Fallen Empire is coming out in early February, and it’s reintroducing a major character to players of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Notably, it involves something that hasn’t been present with the other returning characters – the possibility of a returning romance. The game’s most recent story livestream discusses exactly that, noting that whether or not that romance can be rekindled depends upon a player’s current actions and the state of your relationship with Kaliyo before the expansion story started up.

Bringing back former companions relies heavily on what those companions have been doing for the past five years, which means that it’s something that needs to be done carefully. Players can also look forward to more Mandalorian involvement starting in a future chapter, but you’ll have to wait a bit longer for any major involvement from the Empire or the Republic. The full recording of yesterday’s livestream can be seen just below.

Woetoo  “Bioware have reached politician levels of “being truthful, without being very honest”.” I’ve noticed this more with every year (not just with SWTOR), and its certainly driven me away when I’d otherwise still be squarely into the fanatic category.

I should point out that I think it very likely that Kaliyo will ackowledge her previous relationship with the player.

I still believe the Bioware writing team are still doing their best, despite budget constraints. I don’t believe even they have sunk to the levels of cynicism that I believe the beancounters might impose and that I would fear. Even they must still have enough self worth to sit down when writing the return of an existing character romance interest and find a way to include that previous history into the ongoing story, especially since she would also be a potential future romance interest for some.

At worst, it’ll be a 1 line dialogue acknowledgement that is a throw away line, immediately discarded in order to return to the main story telling of KotFE. Actually at worst, they could live down to my implied expectations in the previous post. Hopefully it’ll be something that players can really point to as the height of truly epic story consequences based on previous decisions. lol, I can’t believe I typed that with a straight face.

Which doesn’t detract from my original concern. Bioware have reached politician levels of “being truthful, without being very honest”. Individual statements with enough wiggle room that cynics and optimists alike can drive fleets of buses through.

Eliot:  …noting that whether or not that romance can be rekindled depends upon a player’s current actions and the state of your relationship with Kaliyo before the expansion story started up.
I’m a cynic. So pardon me if I point out that the devs didn’t actually SAY that future relationships were linked to past relationships.

Devs: Kaliyo’s relationship with you has a substantial impact on your relationship with her. You are welcome to try and rekindle that. Whether she is in a place where she is interested to rekindle that is something you have to play and find out.

What they said was that you were welcome to try to rekindle the relationship; but you’re welcome to try and build a relationship with almost any main character that is introduced (back) into the KotFE story arc. The idea of rekindling need only exist in the player’s mind, not necessarily be recognised by the game engine.

Maybe I’m nitpicking, but “Kaliyo’s relationship” isn’t necessarily historic. They could be just as easily be talking about the relationship you build with the Kaliyo 2.0. Another interpretation is that they are hinting it might not even be possible to romance Kaliyo 2.0 because of events while your character was in carbonite. Unlikely I’ll grant you, but equally likely based on current statements.

Sorry, but Bioware’s embellished perspective for future content has reached the point where I’m always looking for the other shoe to drop. I’m looking for the loopholes. Doubting almost everything, except perhaps the assertion that “you have to play to find out”.
