Path of Exile’s Ascendancy expansion arrives March 4th

Path of Exile’s upcoming expansion, Ascendancy, officially launches on March 4th, 2016 — at 3 p.m. EST, to be precise. The expansion is themed around a “daily changing maze of deadly traps and challenges” called the Lord’s Labyrinth. “The Emperor Izaro constructed deadly trials through Wraeclast to find worthy candidates,” Grinding Gear Games says. “Players will have a powerful set of new skills and items to conquer the Labyrinth, including the introduction of 19 new Ascendancy character classes, each with its own passive skill tree to master.”

Last week, the studio revealed three of those 19 new classes: The Hierophant, Berserker, and Pathfinder.

Grinding Gear Games is having a rather good month; the New Zealand developer announced in January that it had expanded its staff to 70 people. Massively OP’s MJ explored Path of Exile’s incoming content at the end of last year, and we included it in our recent guide to choosing an online action RPG.

It’s nothing but bloat.  I’d give it a pass if it had more active skills or game-changing traits but all it really has going for it are the Keystones.  Everything else is just a mess of dull “Give X more of Y stat”.

chriskovo digi_owl Sounds like you’re playing this as just another RPG whereas ARPGs are an entirely different beast. It’s a weird thing to get used to at first – that your character is pretty much temporary and just farming stuff for future builds you want to try out. ARPG’s are all about repeating the base areas at harder and harder difficulties and not really getting attached to any one character. It’s definitely not for everyone after their first run-through, but it is by-design.

digi_owl chriskovo  Sorry that just doesn’t jive with me anymore. Whatever I earned by the playing the game I earned already.  I don’t want to go back and play that toon again from the beginning I did it already.   I would have just liked to have continued the story with the new acts they put in.   If I roll another character than would just be another class and honestly the story wasn’t good enough to go through again.   It was fine once but not again.

AFinch That skill tree is awesome, it should make you want to play more, not less. If it does make you want to play less, the game is not for you.

chriskovo As digi_owl already said, you’re not supposed to keep playing one character. Big changes to gems only happen when new leagues start. They do that because the majority of players roll a fresh character in the new leagues, so that balance changes don’t bother them at that moment.

AFinch Frankly anything goes during Normal.
The problem really is that to reach those end game maps you basically have to ignore all DPS nodes grab up every life, energy shield and resistance node you can find. This makes the easiest characters to roll Marauder, scion and templar, as they have quick and easy access to a pile of life nodes (never mind that they get plenty of strength, that in turn means even more health).
IMO though the game kind runs out of steam after you have reached the chapter 4 hub. After that you have a straight forward “boss rush” that unlocks the last few vendor gems, and from there you will basically be spamming the same skill gem until you ding 100 (if ever).

chriskovo PoE is basically built around alt-itis. every time they do a major patch you are better of just rolling a new character in the latest league rather than trying to continue on your existing one(s). Basically its is D2 with even more “knobs” to tweak…

Just as an fyi Ranger wasn’t one of the ascendancy classes revealed last week.  Ranger is a current class in the game and The Pathfinder was the actual ascendancy class that was revealed last week for it.

AFinch It’s really not that bad. IMHO, as a new player, there are two approaches you can take:Go with whatever you think makes sense as you learn the game, knowing that you will ultimately bork your character. That’s totally acceptable! You will create many characters during your POE life (if you enjoy it and stick around, of course) and probably end up deleting several, as well.Check the forums for a beginner friendly build that is not very item dependent and stick to it. You will get a viable char that takes you into late game (end game is a whole other ball game). It will also explain some of the mechanics and choices made, which will make you a better player.
Also, just like in D3 there are seasons (called leagues), that typically last 3-4 months. Each seasonal league has a unique mechanic, not found in the permanent leagues. When the league ends, your char moves into the permanent one. I rarely play in the standard league and just start over each time. So, again, don’t get too attached to a single char and just keep re-rolling when you want to try new play-style or get bored with what your using.
