The Daily Grind: What’s your favorite MMO easter egg?

36

The other day someone pointed me to the direction of a big ol’ page of EverQuest II Easter eggs. As someone who only lightly played the game, I thought it was pretty fun to read down this list and see what I was missing.

Easter eggs have a long tradition of being peppered all over video games, and MMOs have certainly run with them. Part of it is the fun of placing little secrets and mentions around the world for player explorers to find, I’m sure, but the rest of it has to be a continuing attempt to help retain developer sanity. Ever wonder why quest titles are almost 90% puns? Each of those puns keeps a dev from snapping, tearing off his or her clothes, and running down the road while screaming of the futility of “class balance.”

What are some of your favorite MMO Easter eggs? Let’s make a nice list here today!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

solaralune Theo454 Ah, that page confirms what I said about Julianos.

Julianos: Julianos was named after Julian Lefay, project leader of Daggerfall.

I’ve gotten a kick out of a lot of easter eggs, but probably the one that cracked me up the most was one that just happened to coincide with a particular bit in an old cartoon that I always found humorous, and have irregularly quoted for decades.
It’s been many years since I encountered this, so my details might be fuzzy, but in EQ2, in the Enchanted Lands, around the docks, is a halfling, whose quest text laments:
“Fritz! Fritz! They killed Fritz! Those lousy stinking yellow faeries! Those horrible atrocity filled vermin!” and the entirety of the quest is near verbatim from the source material, which is the Ralph Bakshi cartoon movie ‘Wizards’.

Theo454 Yep. The 8 divines, minus Talos, are named after beta testers for Daggerfall. Check the bottom of this page:  http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Temples

ApathyCurve This is as good an excuse as any to post a 30 Rock clip, namely the one where Jenna builds a devoted fandom of “Crab Catchers”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pL_CHgENxuM

Not 100% sure on this, as I heard it from a friend, but in the Elder Scrolls Online, one of the 9 divines is named Julianos, which seems to be named after one of the game designers who worked on Elder Scrolls in the past, named Julian Lefay.

Perhaps not an Easter egg so much as it was a clever allusion, I always got a chuckle out of the parrot-headed birdmen on Buffet Isle in the Ocean of Tears (EverQuest).  For those not in the know, a “parrot head” is a fan of Jimmy Buffet.

Linaea Isengard had some real gold in it. “Isengard bids five.”

Maybe the ‘Kill 10 Rats’ quest in LoTRO’s Isengard expansion? Not sure if it’s exactly an easter egg, but it sure made me laugh.

The World of Warcraft is by and large one large easter egg. A lot of fun to suddenly recognize something or find something that’s an easter egg of some sort.
