Fighting the good fight... in really, really ugly armor.
Star Trek Online is officially discontinuing support of its Mac client.

Perfect World says that following the Mac client’s recent struggles and the support required to solve them, it has decided to terminate the client.

“[W]e looked at our Mac support overall and determined that we cannot promise to deliver an experience on Mac that meets our expectations of quality. After heavy consideration, we have decided to end support for the Mac version of Star Trek Online on February 5th. No other version of Star Trek Online is impacted.”

The game’s Mac client will cease to be downloadable as of tomorrow, and the C-Store in that client will be shut down as well. Anyone currently playing on that client can continue doing so until it “become[s] permanently unavailable” in the spring. Reimbursements are on the way too:

“We will be canceling and refunding any active recurring subscriptions purchased between October 1, 2015 and today, including Lifetime Subscriptions. If a payment was made other than a credit card or Paypal, the value of the subscription will be reimbursed to your Arc Account Balance.
We will be reimbursing any Zen that was purchased through Arc or Steam between October 1, 2015 and today to your Arc Account Balance.
We will be reimbursing the value of any Packs purchased through Arc or Steam between October 1, 2015 and today to your Arc Account Balance.”

PWE recommends Wine and other Mac-environment simulators to players affected.

You actually have days where your allowed to be drunk at work? I like that idea. I propose every Friday is beer day.

Because it wasn’t always so few players? They have obviously looked at the current numbers now and decided it’s not worth continuing it.

Doesn’t surprise me – cryptic is barely able to keep the game itself going at a fair standard – having to put in the effort for Mac support is plainly beyond them. They are the masters of doing “just barely enough” to fulfil their commitments – just look at the “2 playable factions” commitment and how thin the Klingon side of the game was.

IMO Macs *are* PC’s, as all that stands for is “Personal Computer”, which Macs certainly are. I think it’s merely marketing that started illustrating a division between the two. I think “Easily Customizable PC” vs. “Just Deal With It PC” might be more accurate…. Though of course unwieldy.

It’s great to use voice for search functions and to sometimes call up apps and make appointments, but it’s so much more effective to use mouse or touch for navigating a GUI.

That’s a hell of a performance difference, thanks for the detailed response!

In their position, this is probably the call I would make as well. Blizzard is moving WoW over to the Metal API, which will probably go a long way toward establishing parity with the PC version finally. The mac client does have some neat touches, like built in video recording and itunes control, but that outdated OpenGL frame rate / feature loss is real.

The problem is that doing that is probably fairly costly, and I’m doubting PWE has Blizzard level resources to throw at it, and their return on it would probably be far lower.

I love OS X, and actually use it on my PC (Hackintosh), but I definitely still flip to Windows 10 for gaming. I get ~45fps on high with the shadows turned pretty much off, at 1080p, in OS X on a 980ti. Flipping to Windows 10, that bumps up to ~80fps, on Ultra at 4K. Hopefully Vulkan can help make some strides towards people being able to have similar experiences regardless of their platform choice.

Saerain IF only 10 players had it then why would they even develop it???!!!! I know plenty of players who use mac.
