Landmark preps March update, demos claim time and camera controls

Daybreak’s Emily “Domino” Taylor has posted an update on Landmark’s status on the official forums. After announcing that a new Landmarks of Landmark competition is on the way, she explains that the team has been busy behind the scenes in preparation for a March update that contains bits that were intended for January.

“[W]e have been hard at work for the past few months refining plans and adding new features, aka ‘awesome stuff’, as well as some necessary back-end stuff too that’ll keep those voxels running smoothly. Due to how many changes are happening right now, we have decided to adjust our previous plans and we will NOT doing the smaller update we had hoped to do in January, instead we’re going to roll that up into the next big update so it can all be tested together. We anticipate that next update happening in March (did we mention there’s a lot of new awesome stuff we’re working on?) and it should be a pretty huge one. And as a reminder and heads up, there is at least one and possibly more claim wipes coming in the future, so while you wait for this update is a good time to work on templating things you want to keep – in particular we recommend templating larger builds in modular pieces, just in case claim sizes/shapes change. We look forward to getting the next update out to you so we can hear your thoughts and get your help testing our changes!”

The first of these will be claim time and camera controls as part of a “mega palette” design for tinkering around in claims, videos for which are included below.

I think they are just feeding the fire. Best bet for them at this point, IMHO, is to just release the content as it’s ready. Don’t announce it, don’t preview it. Just release it. At some point people will notice there is something cool and new out, word will spread, and people will start asking DGC what’s up. THEN they can be all like “What? Oh, that? Yeah, pretty cool, huh? Glad you like it, bye!”.

Until they get dynamic fluids, bring resources back up out of the caves, make the islands much bigger, allow us to customize the shape of our claims (let us choose if it will be tall and narrow like it is now, or wide and short), and let people link their claims together to make full size cities…. THEN they should make an announcement. And then they will watch thousands of people flood the servers and start complaining that all the spots around the spires are full, heh.

Saerain dragonherderx Patience is a virtue, yes. But Daybreak won’t even confirm that it’s still working on EQN specifically; it’s been over five months since we really got anything at all. Not even a head-nod. Not even a “when it’s ready.” That is what makes people nervous, that and the fact that the EQ devs diverted heavily to EQ/EQ2 last fall. Yeah, there’s some “LAWL LANDMARK GTFO WITH THAT CRAP” cluelessness, but that’s really not all that’s at work here.

What is Everquest Next? Was it supposed to be a Tabletop? Some say its creator was Smedley. Nobody ever believed it was real. Nobody ever knew it or saw anybody that ever worked directly on it, but to hear Daybreak tell it, anybody could have worked on EQN. You never knew. That was its power. The greatest trick the SOE ever pulled was convincing the world it didn’t exist.

Well… I suppose this means at least one of their games isn’t dead yet.

What’s that?…. EQN news?….Oh…never mind…Getting updates on Landmark is as exciting as patch notes for MS Paint.

Can we just have a standard rule going forward that if anything comes from Daybreak, it is automatically ignored unless it is ACTUAL news from EQ:Next?
Cause honestly, who gives an F about the other stuff?  I lost interest in most of their games except the 1999 version of one of their games and after splitting the other, not too worried about it.
