The Daily Grind: Which survival sandbox are you most likely to play?

How hard could it be, indeed.

Over the weekend, Justin wrote about the deluge of major online multiplayer survival sandboxes hitting us lately. First there was DayZ and its early zombiebox clones, then Daybreak actually made bank on H1Z1, then ARK: Survival Evolved added a dino dimension to the mix, and soon enough we’ll have Conan Exiles to play — with neither dinos nor zombies! And that’s without even mentioning Minecraft’s survival mode and the dozens of smaller survival games along the way (Die 2 Nite and even Realm of the Mad God spring to mind as just two we covered in detail years ago).

Today I’m wondering whether you play any of these. Which one is the best one for a newbie to the genre, an MMO player crossing the border, so to speak? If you’re the newbie, which one of the big survival sandboxes are you most likely to play — which one do you think has the most for an MMORPG player?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Escape from Tarkov! I’m curious about the new Conan game though.

I think they all miss the mark when it comes to the survival genre. If someone just took all the good parts of most of these games and made it into one game, they’d be 50% of the way there. The other 50% is everything that’s missing from each game that has yet to be designed. It’s kind of a shame, because the concept of survival is great, but none of them really give you that feeling of constant stress that you need to deal with in a survival situation. There’s just a bit too much nosense that doesn’t belong and they all copy the same nonsense in most case.

I’ve been wanting to try this game for ages, looks so pretty.
Only thing stopping me is my dislike for survival type games.

The TransFormers one. I want to wake up on some planet of destroyed tech and salvage for energon and parts and have to avoid/ destroy other transformers to survive.
Oh, this doesn’t exist? It should.

That is absolutely correct! :D See more here:

The app is free now so definitely check it out.
The gist: It’s a story-heavy app that has several mini-games, a few races, a base to build in the phone app using supplies randomly granted while running, and they’re currently working on season 5 of the story. It collects running stats, stats on supplies, stats on zombies chases if enabled, and has achievements like any other game.
If you want more challenge during your run then you can enable “zombie chases” which happen both at random and at certain key points in each “mission”, but I don’t recommend doing this unless you’re already an experienced runner. It will wreck you. (losing to the horde only means that you lose some of the supplies granted during the run, and it keeps track of your escape percentage).

ARK for now.  Conan Exiles might be worth looking into, I dunno.  I’m not a huge survival sandbox person unless I can avoid PvP.

I’m very interested in Conan.  Age of Conan has it’s moments of brilliance.  I love the IP and Funcom did such an awesome job on the TSW spinoff!  I have high hopes for this.

All of them, if they weren’t infected with the dregs of humanity.
